New York: Harper ‘s Magazine Press, 1973. First Edition. 8vo, quarter brown cloth over boards in dust jacket. 85. A fine copy in slightly edge worn dust jacket. “‘A Closer Look at Ariel’ tells us much about Sylvia Plath that we would otherwise never know and that other sources only imply. For its intelligence, narrative pace and clear-eyed sympathy this memoir would be worth reading, even if it were about some anonymous college girl of the fifties rather than the best informed account we could have of crucial events in the life and art of this important poet.”-Publisher

Boston,: James R. Osgood and Company, 1872. Two volumes. First American Edition. Clark A28.2A, B.A.L.7636. 8vo,, original green cloth. This book turns up, but fine copies are not the rule and this copy is an uncommonly fine bright copy. "When "The Marble Faun" was first published, it attracted American readers, at least, almost as much by its descriptions of Roman ruins and Italian landscape by the delicate and imaginative touch with which it reproduced or gave new meaning to famous works of antique and Renaissance art, as by the weird fascination of its plot and psychological problems. How the author was enabled to impart this additional charm to his work is explained by a perusal of his "French and Italian Note-Books." Of France he saw but little, and the main portion of these journals is ... Read more

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. First edition, first issue, first binding 8vo., publisher’s original brown cloth lettered in gilt on spine, housed in a fine morocco backed folding case. xi, 398, ads. A nice copy, with minimal edge-wear and mellowing to the cloth. In a handsome 1/4 morocco clamshell box. FIRST EDITION. The years which Hawthorne passed in England were outwardly the most successful, in worldly prosperity the most abundant, and in other respects among the happiest of his life; forming in the autumn of his career a sort of counterpoise to the idyllic period spent at the Old Manse. Of these years,--from the spring of 1853 to June of 1860, excepting a part of 1858 and 1859, which interval was chiefly spent in Italy,--"Our Old Home" was the literary outcome. Much of the material composing the sketches in this volume occurs in embryonic form in the "English Note-Books," which were then still veiled from publicity; but various elements and touches of fancy were supplied by the author's ...
