Description:
A rare offering of a beautiful watercolour by Pixie O'Harris painted to illustrate the publication "Pearl Pinkie and Sea Greenie" (Angus & Robertson, 1935) Early works such as this one rarely come to market. Pixie O'Harris's second book, "Pearl Pinkie and Sea Greenie: The Story of Two Little Rock-Sprites" is a dainty example of magical storytelling, a vibrant and exciting underwater tale, beautifully illustrated with the artist's characteristic charm and grace. Born in Wales, Pixie O'Harris (1903 -1991) immigrated to Australia with her family when she was sixteen years old and became Sydney's contribution to the Ida Rentoul Outhwaite "Elves and Fairies" school of illustration. With its bright, fanciful colour plates printed on high-quality paper, children's literature expert, Robert Holden writes that Pixie O'Harris' Pearl Pinkie and Sea Greenie was the most lavish children's book published by Angus & Robertson Ltd during the Depression. [HOLDEN, R. A Golden Age: Visions of Fantasy. Pymble,…

Description:
Melbourne: Hutchinson, 1906. First Edition. OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul. FIRST EDITION AND RARE 'Mollie's Staircase' marked the beginning of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite's remarkable success in her international career as an illustrator. A collaborative effort between Ida and her mother Isobel, there is a "discernible air of growing self-assurance ... elves were evolving into her own distinctive creation and her dramatic use of silhouette was emerging as a major compositional device." (Muir and Holden, p. 102). Small oblong quarto, title vignette and twelve full page illustrations and margin decorations; some embrowning, mainly affecting title, and bearing contemporary inscription, in original wrappers with yap edges (sensitively restored), original silk ties, a very good copy.

Description:
Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1933. First Edition. OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul. Rare first edition with original dust jacket. Verse and illustration by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. A dramatic stylistic shift from her body of work up until this point, Ouhtwaite's "Bunch of Wild Flowers" follows in the tradition of Margaret Tarrant and Cicely Mary Baker's little books of poetry illustrated with "flower fairies." Small quarto, six tipped colour plates, line drawings; original decorated papered boards; endpapers foxed, head of spine a little browned, a fine copy nonetheless in a rubbed dust-jacket that has sustained some loss of the rear panel.

"The subject matter was still that of fairies, elves and children... Although this was a world of the imagination there were some Australian motifs such as spider-orchids, monk-hoods, or blow-fly grass which she had seized on for their qualities" (Muir, 'The History of Australian Children's Book Illustration'). Description:
Melbourne: Allan & Co, 1937. First Thus. With the success of the first three song books written and composed by Annie Rentoul and Georgette Peterson and illustrated by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, other editions were inevitable. This collection (the "Imperial Edition, No. 394"), brings together seventeen of the best-loved tunes including the favourites "A Little Aboriginee", "Baby Bear" and "Corroboree", in a smaller format for ease of use by children. Marcie Muir says these tunes, ‘made a lasting contribution to the life of Australian children. For many years, children were familiar with these songs, whether from learning them when being taught to play the piano, from singing them at kindergarten, or from familiarity with the books and drawings'. This ephemeral edition is quite scarce with a cover design by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Extraordinary piece of post-colonial Australian social history. Octavo, bound in original illustrated wrappers, some browning to the page edges, in very good condition.
