Description:
Harvard University Press, 2004 8vo (21 cm), XXII, 460 pp, 2 maps, 10 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (bookplate). "Cyriac of Ancona (Ciriaco de' Pizzecolli, 1391-1452), a merchant and diplomat as well as a scholar, was among the first to study the physical remains of the ancient world in person and for that reason is sometimes regarded as the father of classical archaeology. His travel diaries and letters are filled with descriptions of classical sites, drawings of buildings and statues, and copies of hundreds of Latin and Greek inscriptions. This volume presents letters and diaries from 1443 to 1449, the period of his final voyages, which took him from Italy to the eastern shore of the Adriatic, the Greek mainland, the Aegean islands, Anatolia and Thrace, Mount Athos, Constantinople, the Cyclades, and Crete." Kodansha International, 1982 Folio (37 cm), 48 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "The last great master of the Japanese tradition of woodblock printing known as ukiyo-e was Utagawa Hiroshige (1797--1858). In the Japan of his day, Hiroshige's landscape prints, deeply poetic, genial, intimate, fostered in the common man a new appreciation for nature in art. To such Western artists as Whistler, Cézanne and Gaugun, his work presented a vision of nature that was revolutionary." (from the publisher's description)

Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dust jacket frayed at extremities, small part missing from top, part missing from the back. Internally fine). "The tools used by binders to decorate the covers of a book are of three types -- small stamps, rolls and panels. The first two are impressed by hand; the third by a press. In his "English Blind-Stamped Bindings", Mr Oldham classified and illustrated the impressions made on English bindings with stamp and roll-tools. This companion volume gives the same treatment to panels, reproducing all that are known, and giving them intelligible system of classification". (from the publisher's description)

Estates and residential buildings. The revival of Polish statehood favored the traditional architecture but modernism was enjoying increasing popularity among architects. Elegant, though without decorations, often with asymmetrical facades, buildings with large windows, flat roofs, began to appear on the streets of Polish cities. Many of them were created in Łódź, the city of many avant-garde artists and outstanding architects: Wiesław Lisowski, Józef Kaban, Wacław Ryttel, Witold Szereszewicz, Józef Szanajca, Helena and Szymon Syruks, Barbara and Stanisław Brukalski, "Warsaw tigers" Wacław Kłyszewski, Jerzy Mokszyński, Eugeniusz Wierzbicki. Description:
Harvard University Press, 1993 8vo (23.5 cm), XIV, 457 pp. Laminated wrappers. From the blurb: "John W. O’Malley gives us the most comprehensive account ever written of the Society of Jesus in its founding years, one that heightens and transforms our understanding of the Jesuits in history and today. Following the Society from 1540 through 1565, O’Malley shows how this sense of mission evolved. He looks at everything - the Jesuits’ teaching, their preaching, their casuistry, their work with orphans and prostitutes, their attitudes toward Jews and “New Christians,” and their relationship to the Reformation. All are taken in by the sweep of O’Malley’s story as he details the Society’s manifold activities in Europe, Brazil, and India."

Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, 1988 4to (29 cm), XXVII, 867 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "This continuation of Pylyp Orlyk's Diariusz Podrozny encompasses the dramatic years 1727-1731. From his honorary" confinement in Ottoman Thessalonica, the Ukrainian Hetman-in-exile tried to influence on his behalf the European powers whose representatives were gathered at the Congress of Suissons. To this end, Pylyp Orlyk managed to use the services of France, England, the Netherlands, and especially Sweden and Holstein, who served as his intermediaries with Russia. Of special interest are Orlyk's entries for 1729-1730. It was at this time that Pylyp's son Hryhor quit his military service with King August 11 of Saxony - Poland and became an important player in France's relations with the East. Father and son met in Thessalonica in 1730 and henceforth cooperated in furthering their respective political ventures. The preface by Omeljan Pritsak places…
