Description:
Antwerp, 1914. Broadsheet leaflet (280 x 185 mm). With the arms of Antwerp and the arms of the Plantin Press at the foot. Creased along fold, soiling and browning. Good condition. WWI CHRISTMAS 1914 LEAFLET from Belgian children to "the Children of the United States" USING "THE OLD ORIGINAL TYPES OF CHRISTOPHORUS PLANTINUS (1514-1589)." A remarkable survival. As the German soldiers moved through (neutral) Belgium en route to capture Paris, they confiscated the food supply; civilians, especially children, were brought to starvation or quite near to it. In order to feed its people, the Belgian government appealed to the people of the United States for humanitarian aid. In response, a large number of Americans young and old sent funds and food to the beleaguered Belgian people. Here we have an original instrument sent from the children of Belgium thanking the Americans and their children for "their nice Christmas presents." This expression of thanks bears the original signatures of three persons (no… Read more

An attractive English binding, possibly made in Brighton (see below). * This edition is not listed ESTC or OCLC and is distinguished by the engraved frontispiece, on the verso the printed appeal by W. Bent dated 1785, warning the public of "surreptitious" counterfeit editions of the present work. Indeed, two similar (but not identical) editions are listed by ESTC; these are recorded in just one or two libraries each. Both editions are reproduced in "Eighteenth Century Collections Online" and ours represents an… Read more

Description:
Paris: Ch. Bosse, 1927. FIRST EDITION. Softcover. Very good. Small 4to. xvi, 235, [3] pp. Bound in original wrappers, as issued. Preserved in a protective cloth case. Uncut and unopened. The essential resource for the study of provenance of medical books, still unsurpassed. Ours is one of only 50 on fine Velin paper, rare thus in private ownership. In fact, we have located only two other copies on Velin in commerce in the last 90 years: Maggs' 1983 Catalogue 1037, and (more "recently") at Swann Galleries 19 Oct. 2000. This formidable work is profusely illustrated, with 212 reproductions of bookplates and "super ex-libros" stamps that appear on the covers of bookbindings. There are 688 authoritative bio-bibliographical notices of French book collectors of the 18th- and 19th-century, all of whom (of course) were medical doctors and pharmacists. Olivier and Vailet even include coverage of early hospital libraries. The names of the owners are usefully arranged in alphabetical order. Contains an… Read more

Description:
Baltimore (i.e. Florence): Privately printed, 1906. First Edition. Very good. 4to (255 x 190 mm). vii, 522 pp., 1 f. (colophon). Color frontispiece, 1 plate, numerous reproductions in the text, partly printed in black and red. Bound by C. Tartagli in original polished light-brown calf, spine with three raised bands, three straps extending onto front and back covers, terminating in three raised "Gothick" fleurs-de-lis. Glit lettering on spine and front cover, top edges gilt, others uncut (trifle wear at binding extremities). The elaborately produced catalogue, on handmade paper, printed and bound in Florence, of Henry Walters' fifteenth century books, most of which he acquired from Olschki in a spectacular en bloc purchase of 1,200 incunabula in 1902. This is the only catalogue of the collection. From the famed library of B.H. Breslauer (sale of the Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana, Third Portion, 2005, lot 1275) Corsten-Fuchs, p. 275.

Description:
Stockholm: Lars Salvius, 1758. Good. 8vo. 187 x 115mm. A8 B2 = 20 pp. Disbound, likely extracted from a larger volume. Curiously, the binder missed trimming an outer portion of A2 which was folded, and so retains its original size. Collecting natural history specimens in China at the urging of Carl Linnaeus. This interesting pamphlet marks Osbeck's election to the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, and which contents comprise Osbeck's 1758 inaugural speech at the Swedish Academy. His remarks (translated as "Reasons for useful attention during journeys to China") refer to his time in China and the Far East from 1750 to 1752. A former student of Linnaeus, Osbeck here urges visitors to China to observe and record the conduct of the people, as well as its manufacturing techniques and industries, and to collect useful specimens of local plants and animals. At a time of growing European ambivalence towards China, the Swedish Academy still regarded it highly, particularly the Middle Kingdom, and… Read more
