The publisher, Charles P. Huestis was also an engraver and bookseller, who would be arrested in 1842 for distributing obscene publications in a scheme, where he was the middle man for trusted customers, who would come to his bookstore for certain questionable titles.

With a degree in chemical engineering, in the late 1920s Panteleimonov went to a conference in Berlin and stayed - never to return to Russia again. After spending some time and working in Palestine, the author settled in Paris where he quickly became close friends with other Russian intellectuals including Remizov and Bunin. That period marked the beginning of his short, but remarkable literary career. He published 4 collections of novellas and short stories, including the present one, most of which reflected his memories and love for the simple life of his native Siberia.

It was published by the Zellerbach Paper Company - founded in San Francisco in 1882 by Jewish-German-American Anthony Zellerbach and his sons. Among other things - they would be credited with inventing the molded pulp egg cartons, the window envelope, and the paper towel stack for public facilities, where pulling one towel from the bottom left the rest of the stack intact. Signed by the author with a lengthy and amusing inscription.Zinovii Papernyi (1919-1996) was a scholar, critic, writer, and one of Russia's most widely-known literary parodists. In 1975, his entry on Boris Pasternak in "The Great Soviet Encyclopedia" was the first article in contemporary Russian history to publicly express sympathy and admiration for the prosecuted poet and writer. His scathing humor and his style of "ridding literature of superficial stuff and inflated authority" which have been beautifully portrayed in his current book of satires and anecdotes had him expelled, at one time, from the Union of Soviet Writers.

Reaffirming a royal edict, first issued in 1556, the document dealt with prostitutes, or women, who had conceived in a dishonest way, and concealed their pregnancy, and after giving birth killed their infants and burried them, or threw them away. The women were to be punished by death, the manner of which was to be determined depending on the gruesomeness of the particular case. First edition presumed; 5 x 4; pp. [28], recto only; illustrated beige wraps; paper label with title laid-on; faint crease to lower corner; two small smudges to illustration on front wrap (moisture drops [?]); overall in very good condition.A beautiful edition, possibly a first English translation, of Pasternak's poem "Zimnie prazdniki," it was published by a mystery small press in Santa Barbara, operating under the name Centaur Press (but not the New York publishing company under the same name, known for reviving pulp adventure and fantasy works of the early 20th century). Originally published in Russian in 1947 (?), the poem illustrated Boris Pasternak's love for finding reasons to celebrate the little things and the common happenings in life and for commemorating them in his poetry.

DJ fair with a few closed tears and small losses of paper. Uncommon in the elusive DJ. "Two books" was the first collected edition of Pasternak's major collections of poems - 'Sestra Moia Zhizn' (My Sister - Life), considered seminal in Russian poetry, and 'Temy I Variatsii' (Themes and Variations). Interestingly enough, most poems from the latter were originally written for 'My Sister-Life' but then withdrawn from publication by the author.

Moskva: Sovetskii Pisatel, 1943. Soft cover. Near Fine. First edition, 12mo 4 1/2" x 6"; pp. 3-50, [2] index; original printed wraps; minor wear to covers with a few small faint spots; near fine. Pasternak wrote his collection of poems 'On Early Trains' at a time, when Socialist realism as a cultural model was becoming more and more constricting, thus forcing the author to abandon his natural avant-garde style and resort to, in his own words, a "shoemaker" type of poetry. The poems in this collection were written between 1935-1941. The publication was allowed as a form of propaganda, showcasing the ability of the Soviet literary authorities to "rehabilitate an outrageous and bourgeois writer." Succumbing to the demands of the government did not mean Pasternak liked these particular poems. In fact, in a letter to his friend - fellow writer Daniil Danin, he called 'On Early Trains' "a useless book.

The present book, "Over the Barriers," contains one of Pasternak's earlier collections, before he was forced to drastically change his style of creating poetry in order to comply with Stalin's demand for Socialist realism.
