Description:
Chez J. Auger. White calf spine and corners with red/gilt spine label and marbled boards appear to be a later rebind, which includes unusual cloth-like patterned endpapers. Leather shows light soiling, rubbing, else binding is sound and tight. Book plate on front paste-down. Two pages of tiny writing on newer free end papers attribute the work to Jean Jacques Pujol, and show the publication date to be 1810, although no author or publication date is shown on the book. The written commentary explains the history of the work, which includes political satire of the times, as well as a brief biography of Pujol. Original endpaper illustrations in red show Jesus on the Cross. These (primarily) religious chants from the Castres region of France are in two languages. Most are in French, with a smaller number in Occitan or Langued'oc, the language prevalent in the Pyranees during earlier eras. Index included. . Very Good. 1/2 Leather. 2nd Edition. 1st Printing. 1810.
