Near Fine. pp24 A collection of poems in Yorkshire dialect and standard English by B P Luxton who was a master at Ilkley Grammar School and tutor for the Workers' Educational Association. Near fine in glossy card wrappers bound with a red wavy tape. Signed by the author and inscribed "For Walter Stein who gave me strength when I most needed it". This book comes from the collection of Walter Stein, a British writer, literary critic and Catholic moral philosopher. Born in 1922, Stein was a Jewish refugee from pre-war Austria, educated by the Quakers in York and eventually a Catholic convert who worked in the Department of Extramural Studies at Leeds University. A facsimile reproduction of a Latin Tract bound within a vellum covered pamphlet which has a ten page introduction by George P Johnston. Reprinted from vol xiv of the publications of the Edinburgh Bibliographical Society of which Johnston was the founder. The edition was limited to 90 copies for private circulation. The Compassio is reproduced on smaller (9.5x13.5cm) pages. Very good, the covers are lightly stained and split along the spine, internally fine. Very Good 1930

Various writers including P Morton Shand and Robert Townsend discuss houses in England, including those built in Sydenham, Totnes and Bristol, and modern flats at Hampstead. European houses built in Wiesbaden and Capri are also covered. Very good in clean tan cloth with illustration of a Le Corbusier style building pasted down onto the upper cover. This score is from a large collection of scores that belonged to the conductor Sir Colin Davis, many annotated and used in performance, almost all from the post-war period and including at least two examples of scores from which Davis conducted the work's premier: Thea Musgrave's Clarinet Concerto (Davis was himself originally a clarinettist by training) and Malcolm Williamson's The Stone Wall which Davis premiered at the Last Night of the Proms in September 1971. Most of the scores are full size performance versions, several very large indeed in order to accommodate the scoring of a post-Schoenberg orchestra. Davis achieved global recognition for his conducting with a particular enthusiasm for the music of Mozart, Berlioz, Elgar, Sibelius, Stravinsky and Tippett. Very Good 1952

Westminster: Nichols and Sons, 1884. Soft cover. Near Fine. [4 plates] pp 8 The first separate publication of Parker's account of the Hospital of St John the Baptist with a letter from the author. The book is bound in most attractive original green boards with gilt lettering to the front. Trivial wear only to the corners leaving the binding near Fine. Internally Fine, with the letter from Parker tipped onto the front endpaper. Writing on 'High Wycombe' headed paper Parker presents this 'clean copy' of the volume to his correspondent, adding on the endpaper: 'With the Author's Compliments Sept 1884'. Altogether a very superior copy. Near Fine 1884
