Two small specks of wear towards the top of the jacket spine, sunning only to the apricot of the "NN" badge to the foot of the spine, an attractive copy. New Naturalist series no. 74.

A series of woodcuts, linocuts and collographs by various artists of the places and buildings that shaped Thomas Paine's time in the town.

London: W. Clark, 1820.. First edition, 8vo, 8 pp. Contemporary marbled paper wrappers, armorial bookplate folded over the spine. Signed "Atlanticus", this piece originally appeared in the Pennsylvania Magazine in 1775. Gimbel p88.

Three works bound in one, "Miscellaneous Articles" first edition, 33, (3 advertisement), 36, 40 pp. Some light browning and minor tears, one corner torn away without loss. 20th century boards. "Miscellaneous Articles" collects 8 pieces; letters to the Marquis of Lansdowne, the Authors of the Republican, Abbé Syeyes, Lord Onslow the people of France and two to Henry Dundas as well as his "Thoughts on the Peace". "A Letter to Abbé Raynal" first appeared in 1782 and remains one of Paine's most important works, disputing an earlier account of the American revolution, and indeed the definition of "revolution" itself. Paine's first work, agitating for higher wages for himself and his fellow excise-men. Despite lobbying many M.P.'s the campaign was not a success, and Paine returned to Lewes to find himself dismissed, officially for deserting his post. The failure set him on the path that would see him take ship to America the following year. "Printed by Peter Chasseaud at The Market Tower, Lewes," commemorating the bicentenary of Paine's death.

The late proclamation being the government's warning against "wicked and seditious libels" in May 1792, directed chiefly at the second part of "The Rights of Man". London: R. Carlile, 1819.. 8vo, 26, (2 advertisement) pp. Recent wrappers, title page replicated on upper cover. "An attempt by Paine to try his hand at economic forecasting" (Keane). First published 1796 and enthusiastically adopted by the French Council of Five Hundred, who paid for its printing and translation into German, believing that its criticism of bank notes and England's level of debt would influence international financiers. Pinner, 1942.. 4to. Bound collection of twelve monthly issues, each with original colour printed front and rear wrappers bound in, sand coloured buckram boards. Numerous illustrations and advertisements throughout, some in colour. Very good.

A scarce little volume containing short pieces on artists including Ford Madox Brown, William Holman Hunt, Charles and Edwin Landseer, James Linnell, J.E. Millais, and D.G. Rossetti.

Darkening to the spine, some wear to the extremities, else a decent copy.

Very good.
