Montreal, QC: Canadian Pacific, 1924. Paperback. Fine. A Preliminary Announcement brochure, issued in Montreal on May, 20th, 1924 for the upcoming Feb. 9th - April, 11th, 1925 Mediterranean Cruise of the CPR steamship S.S. Empress of Scotland. Narrow 8vo size (8-3/8 inches tall), pp. 16, illustrated throughout w. B&W photo reproductions of the vessel's interior and exterior, itinerary table and a cruise route map. A fine copy. Even 100 years later, this is still an attractive style of travel for many.

Canada: Canadian Pacific, 1961. Hardcover. Good. An unusual CP item from an era when CP were struggling unsuccessfully to keep their passenger rail traffic a viable business model with the proliferation of the automobile. Cloth backed paper over boards with paste-on label to upper board, narrow folio (12-3/4 inches tall), pp. 59-300, leaves lined and numbered in blue ink at top corner of both sides. Volume has some wear, soil and stains to front cover, lacks ffep and pp. 1-58, excised prior to our acquistion quite likely because they contained complaints! Date taken from the CP logo printed on the front cover label which was used by CP from 1960-1968 and from the printed date "6-61" in the upper right corner. Ref. Choko p. 372.

A very scarce CPR publication, with just three institutional copies found by OCLC : The British Library, UBC and Ingenuim Library and Archives [Science & Tech.] in Ottawa. Brad-bound thick 16mo size (5.75 inches tall), pp. xxv, 159 pages, [1], plus 1 unnumbered leaf w. halftone illus. of a table setting, index, one leaf loosely inserted - an update on cigar prices - dated "25/2/31". Volume is complete, but with heavy wear to covers - both having long vertical cracks, a tape repair to spine, chips from covers, toning to text with a stain to upper corner affecting all of text block edges and a short tiny worm hole - also to upper corner of text block. Pages i-xxv are the Index and Price List ; pp. 1- 14 are General Instructions ; pp. 15-147 contain Recipes and Service Instructions ; pp. 148-159 contains Terminal Recipes and Instructions. Vincennes, France / Milan, Italy: PATHÉ Journal / La Domenica del Corriere, 1923. Mounted Photograph / Newspaper. Near Fine. Achille Beltrame. A rare chess photograph, capturing a multitude of participating moving parts during this living chess game, played in 1923 by two chess champions - Edouard Pape and André Muffang. The game was played in Compiègne, France and this photo, we believe, is a still taken from what is possibly the "lost film" (many films from the era have been "lost" due to the nitrate film used) of the event made by the pioneer film makers, the Pathé Brothers. This image has the rounded corners common to moving film stills and is also stamped in blind with their company name "PATHÉ - Journal" on the lower left corner of the card mount. The mount has inked on verso in a period French hand "Compiègne - Tournoi d'échecs vivants" [Living chess tournament]. Toronto, ON: T. Nelson & Sons, 1917. Paperback. Good. Date of 1917 from inside back cover, which gives the cash sums received up to Aug. 9, 1917 for The Serbian Boys' Fund. Published 1915 through 1919, this is a part from a series telling the story of the first world war for children. Green paper wraps, 8vo (9-1/2 inches tall), pp. [49]-112, illustrated w. photo reproductions and maps. Volume with small chips to spine ends, text toned and some stains to back cover from what appears to be excess publisher's binding glue. An interesting edition from this series, having "Recommended by the Minister of Education for use in the Public School Libraries of British Columbia" printed on the front cover. All the glory of war, published here contemporaneously for children of the day to enjoy.

Billed as "The Greatest Attraction of It's Kind Ever Offered as a Floor Show in Southern California" this rare piece of Compton, CA ephemera was printed to advertise the first annual circus held at the McDonald's Party House in Compton, California in August, 1944. A printed broadside, measuring 18 x 12 inches wide, printed on recto only in red ink onto thin paper, with some toning and minor edge wear, fold lines and a small stain at left edge, date in pencil "1944" at lower right corner. Originally printed to be pasted up and pinned up around town, this copy may have been a file copy - or mailed farther afield, judging by the fold lines and it's great condition. Vancouver, BC: Amputation Club of B.C., 1919. Paperback. Very Good. Staple-bound printed wraps, paste-down halftone photo reproduction of the statue "Their Name Liveth For Evermore" by C. Marega at center of upper cover, 4to, (11-1/8 inches tall), pp. [16], [1]-160, I-XXVIII (ads), illustrated throughout with plates, line drawings and photo reproductions, index. Volume w. some wear and scratches to covers, toning and light soil else unmarked. An uncommon title in the trade, filled with stories, works of art, wartime recollections, town and city Rolls of Honor, Victoria Cross heroes and short regimental histories. Page 154 has "Japan's Share in the War" and features Private T. Sato who "... was credited as having been recommended for the Victoria Cross." along with a photo of "The Japanese Contingent Roll of Honor" on p. 155. A nice copy.
