New York: Harcourt, Brace, and World, (1967). 8 1/2" x 6." [i-vi] vii, [1-2] 279pp. Blue linen cloth over boards. Gilt title at spine. In original pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped). SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the dedication page. Jacket with an approximately 1" closed tear at lower margin of front panel. Book with just the slightest lean and some trace corner bumping. In addition to the autor's signature, another gift inscription (not by the author) is present on the first endpaper. A sharp, signed copy of the first printing of Clara Claiborne Park's intimate memoir of raising an autistic daughter. In an era largely dominated by the myth of the "refrigerator mother" propogated by the research of Leo Kanner and Bruno Bettelheim. which largely blamed autism on emotional neglect caused by mothers working outside of the home, Park's book, written during an era when treatment for autism consisted almost solely of insitutional confinement, was the first book-length account of an autistic child being… Read More

Description:
Various, including Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee, (1992-2002). 13 sticky-page commercial photo albums holding about 625 color drugstore print snapshots, several ticket stubs, and some varied ephemera. About 20 prints sporadically perished from albums. Overall condition excellent. Very good or better throughout. 13 albums worth of snapshot photography documenting chiefly late-career performances by Waylon Jennings at venues in southern Indiana and Kentucky from about 1992 to 2001. Captured by a single, devoted fan, the images include many featuring performances with Jennings' wife, Jessi Colter and one with the short-lived supergroup The Highwaymen. The albums typically capture single concerts at venues like the Little Nashville Opry in Nashville, Indiana ; The Executive Inn in Owensboro, Kentucky ; and various nightclubs in Louisville, Kentucky. The final two albums document the anonymous compiler's attendance at an estate sale held at the Jennings' home in Brentwood, Tennessee, one of his final… Read More

Description:
Portage County, Ohio, (1979). 42 color snapshot photographs. Each approximately 5" x 3 1/2." [WITH] A single sheet, approximately 8 1/2" x 11" event flyer with print to recto only. All about fine. A small archive of snapshot photography accompanied by an original event flyer from the 1979 "Big Yank II" truck pull held in September of 1979 at the Portage County Fairgrounds outside of Akron, Ohio. Nighttime photographs, often with blurred headlights, capture the competition along with participant and spectator culture in more than 40 fine photographs to an undeniably artistic (albeit likely naive) effect. A scarce surviving group on truck pull competition from the late 1970's boom in the scene brought on by the seminal monster truck, Bigfoot, arriving on the national scene.

Description:
[Los Angeles, California], [ca. 1970's]. 8 black and white snapshots. Uniform prints on glossy Kodak-branded paper, each about 5" x 3 1/2." Fine condition. An undated, though seemingly-1970's series of snapshots capturing armed men standing at guard before the entrance of the Jewish Community Building at 590 N. Vermont Ave, just west of Downtown Los Angeles, as neo-Nazi protestors stalk the sidewalk out front holding Nazi flags and picket signs illustrated with swastikas above the phrase "NO TROOPS FOR ISRAEL." Prints are undated, though Kodak stamping to the versos, combined with multiple cars seen in frame, suggests early-to-mid-1970's, early in the existence of the Los Angeles chapter of the extremist Jewish Defense League, whose members are likely those standing guard, armed with machine guns, before the doors of the Building.

[Austria], (1927-1935). 23 photo albums. Various outside dimensions from 6” x 4” to 8” x 5 1/2.” Holding more than 1,200 black and white snapshot photographs to rectos and versos of paper leaves. Prints range in size from about 2 1/2” square to approximately 5” x 3 1/2.” Some infrequent handling wear and a few perished prints from pages, otherwise all uncommonly clean and well preserved. About very good-plus. A substantial archive of vernacular snapshot photography all originating from the same, almost certainly Austrian, family and dated between 1927 and 1935. More than 1,200 images focus on what appear to be travel and holidays, often in the Alps. The images range from typical point and shoot family views to significantly more considered, artful impressions of the human figure, Alpine scenery, city views, etc... all combining to form a lovely and broad archive of Austrian vernacular photography in the era just prior to the onset of World War II. Albums are a blend of seemingly… Read More

[St. Louis, Missouri], (1895). Single albumen print photograph approximately 7 1/2" x 4 3/4" on a card mount (approximately 10" x 8").Contemporoary pencil notation to verso: "SAINT LOUIS / FEBRUARY 8TH - 1895 / JOS. A. KANE." Print lightly faded, lower right chunk out of mount. Overall good. An evocative view of a St. Louis streetcar dated 1895. Lettering to the front of the car reads: "Grand Ave. Rwy. Co." and architectural environs suggests to us Benton Park. Further, the address number "2001" can be read above the front door of the house at left, rear, suggesting to us a location of the corner of Wisconsin and Arsenal, immediately across the street from Benton Park (City Park at the time).

Some mild handling wear, most notably to the Polaroid. A few prints with ink notations to versos. Overall well preserved, group about very good. A small archive of color snapshot photography compiled by a woman known only to us as "Hollie" and documenting her time in Nashville and on the road as a back-up singer for the popular country music band Confederate Railroad, circa-1993. Views center on life on tour and on stage, several capture a scene in a Nashville Printer's Alley nightclub called Barbara's and feature excellent candid views of a pre-record deal Kenny Chesney, some show her at home with family, etc... An uncommon vernacular glimpse behind the scenes at early 1990's Nasvhille, through the eyes of a side performer, as the country music industry bommed in mainstream popularity.
