Description:
This is an unread copy of World War I : The Definitive Visual History, written by H.P. Willmott, the British military historian, author, and Sandhurst lecturer. It was a best-seller when it was initially published in 2007; this is the soft cover edition, published in 2009. It's a must-have for anyone wanting to know more about the Great War--the war that changed everything.
It starts with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and ends with the Treaty of Versailles. It includes some of the war's most prominent battles, such as the Somme and Verdun, with direct accounts from soldiers and civilians. It discusses the key players, and weaponry and equipment--and the effect it had on different sections of society.
Each chapter begins with a map and visual timeline to help explain why, when, where, and how things happened, and it goes into exhaustive detail. There is also a list of commemorations and memorials.
This is a visually stunning book that contains hundreds of photographs, many seen for the… Read More

Description:
This is a first edition of The Iowa Baseball Confederacy, a 1986 novel written by the Canadian author W.P. Kinsella (1935-2016). Kinsella is best known for his novel Shoeless Joe, which became the film Field of Dreams. The Iowa Baseball Confederacy tells the story of Gideon Clark, a man on a quest. He is out to prove to the world that the indomitable Chicago Cubs traveled to Iowa in the summer of 1908 for an exhibition game against an amateur league, the Iowa Baseball Confederacy. But a simple game somehow turned into a titanic battle of more than two thousand innings, and Gideon Clark struggles to set the record straight on this infamous game that no one else believes ever happened.
310 pages.
The dust jacket is unclipped and has wear along the edges.
The book's spine is cream and has a little discoloration. It was a gift and there is an inscription on the front endpaper. But it doesn't appear that the recipient read it.
Other than that, it's perfect.

Description:
This is a first reprint (1945) of The River Road, a best-selling novel by the Louisiana writer Frances Parkinson Keyes (1885-1970). It tells the story of the d'Alverys, a hot-blooded Creole family living on a sugar plantation between the two world wars.
This copy is in good shape. No dust jacket. The covers have some discoloration and fading, especially on the spine. A bookseller wrote the price on the inside back cover. The paper has darkened quite a bit.

Other than that, it's perfect. There's very little shelfwear. Likely never read--there's still a printer's trimming error on page 45 (an extra corner) and there's not a mark or indication of use on any of the pages.

Description:
This is a first edition (1966) of I, The King, a best-selling work of non-fiction by the American writer Frances Parkinson Keyes (1885-1970). It tells the story of the Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665), an accomplished and talented man who gave us the Golden Age of Spanish culture--and then was blamed for the decline of Spain. His story is told in the context of the four women who most affected his life.
This copy is in excellent condition. The dust jacket (unclipped) has the shelfwear that you see. It did encounter a spill, which stained the inside of the back of the dust jacket, and the front endpapers as far as the Contents page. The paper has darkened, according to its age.

Other than that, it's perfect. Clean covers with no shelfwear, and no marks of any kind on the rest of the pages.

Description:
This is a mint-condition first edition (1973) of The Peninsular War, by the military historian Roger Parkinson. The Peninsular War was the military conflict fought by Spain and Portugal, assisted by the United Kingdom, against the invading and occupying forces of France for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. It began in 1808 with Napoleon at the height of his power and ended with his attempted suicide in 1814. It is the war that made Arthur Wellesley the Duke of Wellington. This narrative recalls the horror, excitement and drudgery of history's first guerilla war. The battles of Vimiero, Corunna, Talavera, Bussaco, Fuentes de Onoro, Albuera, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vitoria and Toulouse are firmly embedded in the British military psyche, and are emblazoned on many British Army regimental colours. It is reviewed as "an excellent book, written in a brisk and accessible style." This book does what it does very well; it is a brief overview of a very significant period in European… Read More

Description:
The full title of this book is The Backwoods of Canada: Being the Letters of the Wife of an Emigrant Officer, Illustrative of the Domestic Economy of British America. It was first published, in the UK, in 1836. This is a facsimile reprint. Catharine Parr Traill (1802-1899) was a successful English writer when she married a British officer who, in 1832, was posted to Canada. She was wholly unprepared for the struggles they endured while establishing themselves in the vast, still unexplored, wilderness. But she remained positive and upbeat, wrote many letters to her mother about her experiences, and they became this book. The book was meant to serve as guidance and advice for other immigrants, but it became a best-seller, and a classic, of both social history and nature writing. This is a trade paperback, 351 pages with many illustrations. It has one dogear, on page 19. Unread after that. It is otherwise perfect.PLEASE NOTE: THE STATED EXPECTED SHIPPING DATE APPLIES ONLY WITHIN NORTH AMERICA.… Read More

Description:
The Grey Knight: An Autumn Love Story is an Edwardian tale of romance, published in 1908 by Thomas Nelson and Sons, Edinburgh.
I doubt that it was re-printed; I can only find one other mention of it, in the archive of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. So this is both a first edition and a limited edition.
Mrs Henry de la Pasture (Elizabeth Bonham 1866 –1945), and after her second marriage styled Lady Clifford, was an English novelist, dramatist and children's writer. She wrote 15 novels and three plays and was awarded a CBE in 1918. (Her daughter Edmee was the author of the Provincial Lady series, under the name E.M. Delafield.)
276 pages plus 11 pages of ads, 4 ½" x 6 ½" x ½"
Dark Red boards have an etched design on the cover, and black text and design on the spine. There is a little discoloration to the covers, but a professional could clean that off. This is a reproduction of Before the Bath, a charming painting by the Canadian artist Paul Peel (1860-1892), who was on his way to becoming an acknowledged master when he died at age 31. The subject is two little girls whose nanny is trying to persuade to come for their bath.
The print was purchased at the Tate Gallery in London in 1982 and framed the following year, in a distressed wood frame with gold interior trim. It is signed and dated by the framer.

Description:
This is a first edition of English Romantic Writers, an anthology produced in 1967 by David Perkins, Professor of English and American Literature, Emeritus, at Harvard University.
It is selected works of English Romantic writers, each with a biographical sketch and a critical analysis of his work. It covers the years 1798 to 1832; it begins with William Blake and ends with Thomas Lovell Beddoes. It's mostly poetry and letters, but it also contains essays and some prose.
I attach photos of some of the contents--the table of contents is 20 pages.
It is 1265 pages on superfine paper. It includes a few illustrations.
As you can see, there is a coffee spill to the side of the book--most did not into the book. Some of the liquid did make it inside, but not until page 1125.

Description:
Frederick Albert Cook (1865-940) was an American doctor and explorer who, in 1906, claimed that he had reached the peak of Mount McKinley, making him the first to scale North America's highest mountain. He had not. At the time, there were questions, inquiries, and an endless trail of fake photographs, incorrect maps and bribed witnesses.
This book's authors spent decades gathering evidence to disprove Cook's claim; this book details how false it was.
It is 193 pages, including loads of photos and maps--and a color pull-out map.
Unclipped dust jacket. Almost no shelfwear--the dust jacket is deliberately designed to look like an old photo album.
Until now, it was unopened. But, just around the edges, the paper has started to yellow. That may also be deliberate--I don't know. But it's an expensively-produced piece. Beautiful book.
