Description:
Leiden: Justus van Colster, 1616. First Editions. Very good. Small 4to. 3 works in one vol. I: [16], 188 pp. + 1 (of 2) ff., lacking final leaf with dedicatory verse, but with the Errata leaf (neither of which are present in copies at Countway and elsewhere). Title-page woodcut after Durer's Dance of Death series. II: [22] (of 24, lacking title-page with author's portrait on verso), 270 pp. III: [2], 128 pp. Some plates with old repairs. Bound in contemporary polished Dutch vellum, yapp edges (textblock detached from vellum casing at end), spine lettered in early MS. All first editions. Our copy is distinguished by having the spectacular folding Theatrum Anatomicum plate, engraved by Andries Jacobsz Stock after a painting by Jacob de Ghein, not present in all copies. This celebrated illustration depicts an anatomical demonstration by Paaw surrounded by two dogs and ca. 50 men: knights, savants, peasants, and burghers, who can be differentiated by their clothes. Above all stands a skeleton holding a… Read more

Description:
Palermo: Centro di studi filologici e linguistici siciliani, 1978. First Edition. Fine. Large 8vo. 263, [4] pp. Original wrappers, edges almost entirely uncut. Illustrated with 18 full-page photographic plates of high quality. NOT ex-library! Scarce catalogue of fifteenth century books in the Municipal Library of Palermo, a formidable collection of 1,038 incunables (plus three in the Appendix, for which see below). Ours appears to be the only copy currently on the market. Admirably compiled by Giuseppina Li Calsi (1917-2001), the work contains 18 *useful* images of genuinely rare incunables; in other words, this is a catalogue for serious scholars. The collection contains at least three "unica": 1. Andreas de Escobar "Modus confitendi" [Rome: Printer of 'Mercuriales Quaestiones' (Theobaldus Schencbecher ?), about 1473] -- Li Calsi's Appendice I & Tav. VIa-b; 2. Indulgentiae ecclesiarum principalium urbis Romae [Rome: Printer of 'Mercuriales Quaestiones' (Theobaldus Schencbecher?), about 1473] -- Li… Read more

Description:
Augsburg and Nuremberg, 1820. A quantity of five sheets, the largest being 28.5 cm x 19 cm, the smallest 18 cm x 16.5 cm. The specimens offered here are smaller portions of what once were larger sheets. One of the samples was apparently used as a back wrapper at some point as is suggested by the stab holes along the right side. ADDED: an assortment of 13 small sheets of marbled and decorative papers of varying sizes (18th-20th century). Small but very useful (and very pretty) group of 5 gold-printed Brocade Relief papers. With one exception, the makers of these brocade papers have been identified. We believe that the present assemblage will prove to be a joyful source of bibliographic inquiry for students young and old, as it offers a small sampling of luxurious decorated papers from the early 18th century (Abraham Mieser of Nuremberg) to the early 19th century (G.N. Renner & Abel of Augsburg). NB: We have taken the liberty of adding an assortment of 13 small sheets of later decorative papers.… Read more

Description:
Lyon: Bibliotheque de la Ville de Lyon, 1967. First Edition. Very good. 4to. [4], iii, 106, [2] ff., printed on rectos only. Original wrappers (a little worn). NOT ex-library! Scarce Supplement to Pellechet's great "Catalogue des Incunables des Bibliotheques publiques de Lyon" published in 1893, which only comprised entries 1-634 (sic!), a work which is freely available on Hathitrust. Parguez's Supplement is, to our knowledge, has no digital surrogate, and indeed is a mimeograph of a typescript. This short-title catalogue gives detailed provenance information (all traced in a useful index) as well as details for every binding. There is a list of towns represented (with the names of specific printers active therein), and a list of printers which also provides a reference to the works which appear in the present catalogue. The final two leaves give errata and addenda. Our copy appears to be the only one on the market. Reference: Bibliographie internationale de l'humanisme et de la renaissance, no.… Read more

Description:
Hartford: Case, Tiffany and Burnham, 1848. Very good. 2 vols. Original publisher's black leather bindings, stamped in gold, all edges gilt, endpapers plain. A few very minor, unobtrusive repairs. Occasionally heavy foxing throughout, as commonly. The elaborate center- and cornerpieces on the present binding must be seen to be fully appreciated. Whereas embossed bindings by Hartford publisher Case, Tiffany and Burnham are recorded in Wolf, "From Gothic Windows to Peacocks" the present bindings do not because they are STAMPED, not embossed (we are grateful to Michael Zinman for pointing this out to us). Our bindings are preserved in beautiful state, suitable for exhibition. Patton's Cottage Bible remains an excellent example of American book arts at this date, as it is enriched with etchings and engravings by American artists F. Kearney, W. Keenan, J.A. Adams, A. Dick, M. Osbourne, James Smillie, and J.B. Longacre. The work seems to have been largely ignored by specialists, no doubt due to the fact… Read more

Description:
Hartford: D.F. Robinson and H.F. Sumner; stereotyped by James Connor and William R. Cooke, 1834. Good. 2 vols. Vol 1: [2], 3-736, [2] = 738 pp., with frontispiece and 7 plates. Vol 2: [2], 737-995, [9], 1003-1440, [3] = 711 pp., with engraved frontispiece and 5 plates. Bound in speckled calf, spines lettered in gilt. Covered with provincial American dust jacket of cloth, with holes cut out to show title and volume number on spine (cloth covers with minor wear along spines, slightly soiled, corners bumped). Marbled textblock edges, age-toned, foxing throughout. Tissue guards heavily foxed as commonly. In both volumes the ownership inscription of Mr. Isaac Humeston dated March 8, 1835. A striking example of a home-made American cloth "dust jacket," the likes of which we have not encountered. The jackets cover two publisher's leather bindings on the 1834 Hartford Cottage Bible which -- on account of the ingenious construction of their coverings -- have never seen any sunlight. We have noted identical… Read more

Description:
Paris: Chez la vefve Claude de Monstr'oeil, 1616. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo. 1 f., [6], 96 pp. Collation: A4 A-M8, COMPLETE. Title-page cropped on upper margin affecting the first and largest word "Plaidoyer." Recent sympathetic wrappers in the antique style. The "Affaire Baron," brilliantly argued by Julien Peleus, one of the most esteemed lawyers of his day, in which the eldest son and heir (Pierre, a priest) decides to sue his younger brother (Antoine) to recover the inheritance the former had renounced years earlier. This important trial brings to light the very problematic issue of inheritance when the eldest male son takes his vows, and thereby renounces his birthright and associated lands and properties. The trial took place on April 14, 1616, and was cited in in Article 13 of the Co√Ľtume de Paris; the eldest son Pierre was relieved from the renunciation, and all properties which had subsequently passed to his younger brother and his wife were reverted by the Court. Description:
London: Hamiltons Gallery, 2013. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong folio. Altogether 69, [3] pp. including 27 superb photographic plates, each with captions on opposite page. The new catalogue raisonne of Penn's astonishing "Cranium" series of Animal skeletons, valuable for forensic research, to say nothing of the extraordinary photographic celebration of each specimen. The photographs were first exhibited in 1989 at Pace Gallery London, accompanied only by a flimsy 36 page catalogue. "Cranium Architecture" sees Irving Penn create a beautiful, absorbing study of animal skulls from the collection of the Narodni National Museum in Prague. From gorilla to giraffe, the photographer treats each subject with fastidious equality - zooming in or moving away to ensure that all the skulls are the same size and placing them in a simple white background. Abstracting the objects so is disorientating and challenges the viewer to look at them in a different way. As the series' title suggests we are… Read more

Description:
Boston: Printed and Sold by Rogers and Fowle, 1747. Seventh Edition (but First American). Good. Small 8vo. Two volumes in one. [24], 287; [5], 184, [4] pp. Contemporary American tooled calf. Flaw to the title page affecting one word and a small tear to one lower outer corner on leaf E1 with loss of a few words but no loss of sense; in each case, a modern reader has supplied the missing words in neat ballpoint ink. Some light staining or soiling; board edges quite rubbed, with some light cracking or chipping to the spine; later pastedowns. Overall a good copy in the original American binding. Preserved in a cloth protective case. This primitive-looking American binding is datable to ca. 1747-1750, and as such is older than all but five of the 61 bindings reproduced in Papantonio's "Early American Bookbindings." While Papantonio's monograph remains the standard reference work on the subject, it focuses almost exclusively on decorated bookbindings which do not represent the kind of books that Colonial… Read more

Paris: (Jean-Baptiste) Gogue & (Jean-François) Nee de La Rochelle, 1776. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 22 January and following. 8vo. iv, 8 [Ordre des livres], xxxii [Avertissement + Table systematique], 382 pp., 4542 lots [livres] + 51 lots [estampes], of which 3059 lots are PRICED in a contemporary hand. French calf (ca. 1830), worn, triple gilt fillet around sides, rebacked with original smooth spine laid down, two red leather labels ("Catalogue Perrot" and "1776"), blue sprinkled edges, blue marbled pastedowns and endleaves. Old stamp of the Archief der Provincie Antwerpen on title-page and final page ("Afgevoerd" i.e. withdrawn). The Perrot sale catalogue was a milestone in the classification of knowledge, "remarkable because it adopted a new system of bibliography which, with good reason, had no imitators" (G. Description:
Seattle (et al.), 1925. 14 vols., large 4to., ca. 29 cm (tall) x 22 cm (wide) x 36 cm (linear), mostly in 3-hole side-stiched black leatherette covers, preserved in very good condition. Very large and interesting literary archive of typescript stories and novels by "El Comancho," a very popular author who specialized in stories of Native American lore and folktales, the American West and Western Expansion, the Pacific Northwest, Hunting and Fishing, and much more. Includes typescripts of "Three Boys in the Hills" and many stories published in "Outdoor Life," often with corrections and annotations (SEE FINDING AID BELOW). This appears to be the only substantial collection of "El Comancho" manuscripts in private hands. The archive, which is preserved in excellent condition, easily contains more than 3,000 typescript leaves. Some of the works appear to be unpublished. Walter Shelley Phillips (1867-1940), also known as "El Comancho," was a self-educated and self-trained naturalist, geologist, newspaper… Read more

Description:
New York: Appleton and Company, 1884. Twelfth edition. Very good. 8vo. Frontispiece engraved by Bobbett-Hooper, 274 pp. + [2] pp. advertisements. Original publisher's brown cloth, gilt, decorated endpapers. Cloth covers with some minor blemishes, lower corner of back cover inexplicably abraided. Contemporary, no doubt original, pale blue marbled wrappers over flexible paste-paper boards (somewhat worn but perfectly sound), original printed spine labels (one missing), uncut and mostly unopened. Excellent, complete copy in original publisher's boards of the most important catalogue of an Italian eighteenth century private library; its purpose was that of an 'inventory catalogue' for the disposal… Read more
