Description:
Brussels: M. Haney, 1846 First edition of "Quetelet's best researches on the application of probability to the physical and social sciences" (Cajori). Original printed wrappers. Affixed to the bottom portion of the front wrappers is a printed slip for the Paris publisher, Jules Renouard, who apparently acquired part of the edition. . Large octavo. Wrappers partially browned, spine split in several places, but a very good copy, in its original state, in a full morocco clamshell slipcase. Quetelet (1796-1874) was a Belgian astronomer, mathematician, statistician and sociologist. He founded and directed the Brussels Observatory. He became interested in the Ë™young science of probability and statistics as an astronomer to explain measurement errors, but became one of the first to see its applications to the social sciences. He understood the complexities of social phenomena and became interested in using what he called "social physics" as a tool to explain crime rates, marital rates, suicide rates,… Read More

Description:
The two complete issues, in original wrappers, octavo. A little fading at spines, small indentation at top edge of the first issue, small rubberstamp on front cover of the first issue. Very good. The first electrical logic machine was built in 1947 by two undergraduates at Harvard, Burkhart and Kalin, who had been taking a course in symbolic logic with Professor Willard V. Quine. (See Martin Gardner, Logic Machines and Diagrams, p. 128). Quine himself, one of the most influential logician-philosophers of our time, made a more direct contribution to computer science several years later, through the above papers, which are the basis of the popular Quine-McCluskey method of logical circuit minimization. This basic method, in various modern versions, is still being used today to automate the design of logical circuits and chips from a specification of their desired behavior, so as to minimize the number of gates or interconnections.
