Description:
Beijing: Rongbaozhai,, 1959. The Chinese Picasso First edition, first printing, of this tribute to the brush of Qi Baishi (1864-1957), one of the "four great masters of 20th-century Chinese painting" (Perkins, p. 404). This is an outstanding example, scarce in this condition, of fine press publishing in 20th-century China. This album reproduces a suite of paintings executed by Qi in 1948, at the age of 88, for his dear friend and fellow master Xu Beihong (1895-1953). Qi and Xu first became associated in the 1920s, when the former's genius was yet to be truly appreciated, and Xu was instrumental in introducing Qi to China and the world, including through a 1933 landmark exhibition of modern Chinese painting in Paris. The present publication was a fitting tribute to the two men at a time when the art world was still lamenting their deaths. Qi remains one of the most sought-after artists of the last century. His works command extraordinary auction prices: in 2017, a set of 12 of his landscape paintings…

Description:
Beijing: Rongbaozhai xinji,, 1955. The Chinese Picasso First edition, first printing, here in excellent condition, of this 1955 collection of "letter papers" curated by the Rongbaozhai fine arts studio, reproducing several dozen works by Qi Baishi, known as the "Chinese Picasso", as well as examples by many other prominent artists from the late Qing and Republican periods. This is an attractive example of fine press publishing in 20th-century China. First produced in 1951, Rongbaozhai's collections of letter papers - the name given to illustrated sheets designed and executed by literati to enhance their written correspondence - showcase the visually arresting work of leading practitioners of this art form. The present work contains many examples by Qi Baishi (1864-1957), one of the "Four Great Masters of 20th-century Chinese painting" (Perkins, p. 404), who also brushed the calligraphy used for the title labels. Qi's contributions exhibit his well-known fascination with insects, flowers and birds,…

Description:
Beijing: Rongbaozhai,, 1952. An exquisite album showcasing the work of the "Chinese Picasso" First edition, first printing, of this attractive collection of paintings by Qi Baishi, one of the "four great masters of 20th-century Chinese painting" (Perkins, p. 404). Published by a leading Chinese fine arts press, it displays Qi's ability to capture subjects from the natural world with unmatched fluidity and energy. Qi (1864-1957) remains one of the most sought-after artists of the last century, famous for his skilled depiction of landscapes, insects, flowers, and birds, variably rendered in either broad strokes or precise lines. The present album selects 22 of his works that, in the opinion of the editors, "demonstrate Qi's ability to capture traditional subjects in ink to evoke brightness, clarity, freshness, and happiness" (preface). This is an attractive example of the fine printing for which the Rongbaozhai press remains famous. Founded in 1894 on the legacy of a studio dating back to 1672,…
