N.p. [Moscow?]: No stated publisher, 1910. No stated edition. Matted photograph. Very good. Gelatin silver print (ca. 9 x 7 inches) within contemporary embossed mat (ca. 13 x 11 inches). The photographer's name and "Moscow" are printed on the mat. A few long shallow scratches to the photo, but overall very good (not examined under the mat). Date of 1910 penciled on back of mat. The photograph shows a trotting horse surrounded by spectators in front of an elaborate racetrack grandstand (probably the Moscow Hippodrome).   It is held by a turbaned handler. Philadelphia: Sold by Universal View Co., Philadelphia and Lawrence, KS, 1903. No stated edition. Very good. Very good stereo card, printed in rich sharp tones. The back is plain. The title continues, "Mile Pacing Record made in 1903, 1 min. 57 seconds." Prince Alert made racing history when he became the first Standardbred to pace a mile in under 2 minutes while wearing hobbles. Hobbles were still controversial then; the stereo shows boots and a contraption on his forelegs only. They didn't help him when he faced the free-pacing Dan Patch, however. Nor did the "extra strong coffee and whiskey" that his trainer Matt Demarest admitted giving him before the race. Reeves recalls the first 25 years of his career and his experiences painting many famous horses--Citation, Ribot, Majestic Prince, Searching, Kelso, Hoist the Flag, and many more. Beautifully written, wrenching teen novel about Scottish runaway Morag, "a truly wild thing, a creature who can find no place in the world of humans, yet cannot live without them."
