Holt, Reinehart and Winston, New York, 1964. Third Printing. Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. black titles spine; "Franklin D. Roosevelt foresaw the likelihood of depression before Herbert Hoover entered the White House. He knew the American habit well enough to expect that it would require collapse of the economic boom before voters would listen to reform. He also foresaw the danger to the United States of a second world war before the isolationist majority in Congress and the country would believe it. He begged Congress for various measures of cooperation with peaceful nations against the rising aggressions of the Axis leaders in time to try to prevent the Second World War, but he got them only in time to help win it. He went so far as to sacrifice the prlnciple of anti-imperialism as a concession to Russia at the Yalta Conference not only to make sure of winning the War but also to secure forehanded measures to prevent a third world war, and he has been bitterly criticized for sacrificing too much, The ... Hambledon and London, London, 2004. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. Norwich remained the second largest city in England until the eighteenth century. Its history over the last 450 years is one of exceptional interest. ‘Norwich since 1550’ is a full account of the post-medieval history of the city and covers all aspects of Norwich life, including its population, housing, churches and chapels, politics, work, education, arts, architecture and medical care. It brings out Norwich's individuality and shows how it became the city it is today. Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1969. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good/N/A. white titles spine; b/w. frontis. illust.; a volume in the 'American Problem Studies' series edited by Paul R. Baker; "the Civil War offers an example of crisis government without parallel in United States history. The nearest analogy perhaps is the Great Depression. The war posed fundamental questions. How did a constitutional democracy - granted express powers by the governed - function in crisis? In what ways did crisis assail the frame of government? To what extent did regular procedure prevail? What role did the President assume? How did political patronage serve as a weapon during the war? What role did political parties play? What was the character of the dominant party? Of the minority party? Were the parties instruments of construction or obstruction? What were their motives? To put the root question, still partially unanswered by historians, what were the politics of the Civil War?"; previous ... Read more

Longman & Co, London, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine Condition. Henry Morris was one of the great English originals. He was a vivid personality and a creative administrator. He advocated the end of the "insulated school", built the first of the community colleges, pressed for the establishment of permanent education everywhere, to be provided by the community for the community. At Digswell House he instituted an entirely novel system of art patronage. At Impington he introduced the New Architecture to the British educational scene. In his day he was considered a crank or a dreamer. Today there is not a community school built or planned that does not draw upon the ideas of Morris and on the example set by him in Cambridgeshire where, for more than thirty years, he was Chief Education Officer. As an administrator he showed brilliantly how the conventional democratic system could be bent to serve his high purposes. "He was an outsider. ... Read more

Victorian and Edwardian Cambridgeshire from Old Photographs

F. A (Introduction and Commentaries by) Reeve

B. T. Batsford, London, 1983. Reprint. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. There is a quality of timelessness about the old photographs in this book. They record a pre-Industrial Revolutionary Cambridgeshire where hand flails were commonplace, a good hurdle-maker was a man of note, and woad was still grown for dyeing. The book is arranged in such sections as Towns and Villages, Rural Crafts and Industries, Special Occasions, Transport, People and Sport. There are pictures here of the activities particularly associated with the County: skating championships, peat cutting, osier tripping and soft fruit cultivation; as well as of subjects of more general interest: market days, horse carriages, windmills, royal occasions and village 'feasts'. The photographers whose work is represented include local men such as F. ]. Smith of Cottenham and J. R. Cooper of Burwell, national celebrities like Francis Frith, and - typically, in what is so often an anonymous art - many more whose na ... Read more
