Ayn Rand (Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum, 1905-1982) has in recent years come back into fashion as a darling of the political right, although she wears her crown a bit inconsistently. After initial failure with two earlier novels, she achieved success with "The Fountainhead," which established her philosophy of Objectivism. Some critics refer to it by other names ("selfishness" is one) and have savaged her writing. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing of the First Edition; meets all the points as a First, lacking only the CP designation. This "New Edition" has been "Revised and greatly Extended" by Katherine Tynan Hinkson. Tynan, herself a member, added later Irish authors from the Literary Revival. Four volumes, large octavos (over nine pounds weight together), with decorative cloth binding in two shades of green. The lettering on the spine is gilt. Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copies. Edinburgh, New York, Paris: Thomas Nelson & Sons, 1916. This interview with an American news agency makes clear John Redmond's ferocious opposition to the ill-fated Easter Uprising. He considers it a "deadly blow to Home Rule" and suggests it was a German plot carried out by "misguided and insane young men." At this moment there was little support for the Uprising; world opinion would change after England executed its leaders. This is a Fine copy of the First Edition. Rare.
