Description:
Edited by Edwin Lankester, Secretary to the Ray Society. London: Ray Society, 1848. First edition (xvii, 502; index), one of two collections published by the Society. Tall octavo in three-quarter red leather over cloth, gilt titles, five raised bands, t.e.g. Two full-page engraved b&w illustrations (frontispiece bust of Ray; Dewlands, Ray’s house), foxed and stained. John Ray (1627- 1705) published a number of works on natural history but is best known for his Historia Plantarum in which he advanced a method of classification of plants according to observed likenesses and differences rather than classifying plants according to fanciful notions of the general way of things. Most of these letters (some of which are in Latin and defeat Miss Porter’s heroic efforts to teach me that language) date from 1659- 1705; several are those written by Margaret Ray immediately subsequent to Ray’s death. A trifle worn and rubbed around the edges, engravings foxed as noted. Still, quite a nice copy… Read more

Description:
London: George Newnes, 1900. First edition (144 pp.). Folio (35cm x 26cm) in scarlet cloth, gilt titles and decoration; seventy-one full-page colour portraits from photographs of British military personalities at the time of the second Boer War. Each military figure’s career is sketched in a single page of patriotic text which accompanies his portrait. Included among the military pin-ups is Robert Baden-Powell, ‘Defender of Mafeking’ (pictured in the uniform of a Colonel of Irregular Horse, perhaps a prototype for the Boy Scouts); Kitchener of Khartoum stares blankly and imperiously from under a fez, rehearsing his pose for the famous world war poster; and a general appears under whom no one (or maybe everyone) would gladly serve: Major-General Sir Bindon Blood. A show-piece for medals, mustaches, ceremonial swords, and plumed hats, it is not a perfect copy, however. The scarlet cloth is blotched and discoloured and several of the portraits are creased, though none are torn. From… Read more

Description:

London: John Murray, 1869. First edition, in two volumes (pp. xxxii, 644, index) with three fold-out maps, 48 engraved plates, and 378 figures in the text. Octavo (22 cm), fine polished green calf, fancy gilt titles in morocco title panels, gilt decoration to cover edges and spines, a.e.g.; fine complimentary endpapers. Nelson in his ODNB article on Robinson says in part, “His books and periodicals provided Robinson with platforms from which to promote his own philosophy of gardening, and in this he was pre-eminently successful. Robinson, it is widely claimed, was ‘responsible for sweeping away... carpet-bedding’... and promoting a more relaxed style using hardy plants.” Robinson is described variously as the father of English gardening, sensitive, irascible, belligerent, saintly, capricious and ‘especially in later life’ apt to hold contradictory views with equal enthusiasm-- but, of course, he’s not the only gardener to do so. Description:

Champaign-Urbana: University of Illinois, 1968. Second edition, revised and expanded (pp. 389, index). Octavo (23.5 cm) in brown cloth with complimentary pictorial dust jacket. An update of the first edition published in 1943, twenty-five years previous. The geographical, historical and cultural border here is the Mississippi, more or less (For convenience, Texas is moved east of the river). Includes many apparently ephemeral journalistic pieces as well as the more enduring works (of Downing, for example). Its scope, however, does not admit Olmsted’s tour of  the slave states, which, while not narrowly addressed to architectural matters, certainly was relevant to the culture in which the architecture grew.  A fine copy in a very good dust jacket (minor wear to the extremities) in protective Brodart sleeve.

Description:
London: Edward Stanford, 1876. First edition thus (viii, 440, adverts) with coloured fold-out map of the northeast of NA, from the Sault to Nova Scotia and from Cape May to the sub arctic, showing growing regions and where to hunt, trap, and fish, and for what. 8vo, in decorative green publisher’s cloth, gilt titles to spine. Under the nom de plume ‘Cariboo’, Rowan wrote a column for the periodical Field featuring ‘useful hints for emigrants and sportsmen’. These columns are gathered here, together with ‘fresh matter’. Rowan wrote, as he said, for ‘people of small fortune’ who if they remained in Britain would find only a pinched and impecunious life and a ‘shabby gentility’, but who if they emigrated to Canada might manage to live in a fashion more in keeping with their pretensions. Rowan was no eager promoter nor a wide-eyed fantasist and wrote from personal experience, whether about raising cattle or fishing salmon. He knew how to stay… Read more

Description:
London: MacMillan, 1915. First edition (xiv, 152 pp.). With 15 colour plates 10 cm x 15 cm, but some larger, tipped in (the play of dawn or sunset light a mountainside is especially affecting) and numerous pen & ink sketches. In decorative green cloth with gilt figure on front cover and titles on spine. Some of the plates-- Sunrise on a Snowy Peak, Moonrise, Mountains in Moonlight, Ascent of the Haunted Mountain. These eight tales of animal life in the anthropomorphic style of Ernest Thompson Seton, of course, conclude with the lucky escape or the unforeseen intervention of a third party. Rundall wasn’t so fortunate, however, and the book bears the saddest of title pages, “Lt. L. B. Rundall, First Gurkha Rifles, Killed in Action, Dec. 19, 1914.” A few tiny spots and missing the rear fep. A very nice copy indeed. Colour plates of Himalayan scenes
