Description:
[Melbourne]: Directorate of Training, RAAF, 1944. First Edition. Paperback. Fine. [Melbourne], Directorate of Training, RAAF, 1944. Small quarto, 40 pages with numerous charts and illustrations (many in colour). Pictorial wrappers lightly scored and creased; essentially a fine copy. Volume 1, Number 2, April 1944. The note printed inside the front cover expands on the need for secrecy: 'Copies of the pamphlet must on no account be removed from units, and details of the statistical data must not be permitted to become known to other than Service personnel who are required, in the course of their duty, to be fully informed'. It is perhaps not surprising then to discover that, apart from one copy of Volume 1, Number 3, December 1944 in the Australian War Memorial, Trove locates no other issues.

Description:
[Hindmarsh: Unknown Photographer, 1898. [Hindmarsh, Unknown Photographer, circa September 1898]. An original gelatin silver photograph (image size 151 × 209 mm, with the small reference number H2 in the negative), mounted on thick card as issued (247 × 304 mm). Small amount of matching watercolour applied to the top right-hand corner of the image when it was printed (to mask a slight imperfection in the negative); minor surface loss to silverfish to the mount, with slight loss to the corners; the photograph itself is in excellent condition, and all blemishes to the mount can be completely matted out. 'The banjo was introduced to America by enslaved Africans in the mid-1600s.... the earliest banjos, also known as banjars, were not the instruments we recognize today. Early banjos varied greatly. They could have any number of strings. The body could be made from a gourd or other hollowed frame. The shared feature was an animal skin stretched across the body which gave the instrument its signature tone… Read more

Description:
This experimental image (102 × 76 mm) is mounted on plain card (121 × 190 mm); both are in fine condition. The card is warmly inscribed (we believe to Becquerel himself) by its maker, one Julius Hartmann of Michelstadt, Hesse. He refers to it as a 'Radiographie'. On the verso he describes in detail how the image was produced. The stylized portrait of Becquerel in a laboratory setting, beneath which is the letter R within a pentagram emitting rays, was produced on a zinc plate by his brother, Professor A. Hartmann of Darmstadt (Friedrich Ludwig Albert Hartmann, 1868-1928, a professor of drawing and painting at Darmstadt, Germany, from 1902). The zinc plate was placed between a sensitized photographic plate and a layer of ground uranium ore ('faute de Radium') on a sheet of lead, and exposed for 69 hours! This gelatin silver print was produced from the resulting negative. Becquerel discovered radioactivity in 1896; he received the 1903 Nobel Prize for Physics jointly with Marie and Pierre Curie for… Read more
