Cohen & West, London, 1963, fifth impression; 8vo, pp vii, 219; original dark blue cloth, lower two thirds of both the front and back covers damp marked to around 5cm at the foot in each case, some rubbing of the spine; internally clean and good other than on account of some light staining on the end papers as a result of the damp having affected the covers. This is a collection of 12 essays by the author written or delivered as addresses over a period of 25 years (to about 1950) and showing his interests in and contribution to the development of social anthropology. Radcliffe-Brown was influenced in his approach by the work of Durkheim and by Whitehead earlier. There's a short introduction by Evans-Pritchard and Fred Eggan.

Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1927, original edition; large 4to, pp xv, 243, v; 90 figures in the text and with 47 plates; blue cloth gilt, a little rubbed but a good to very good copy, very clean inside. Randall-Maciver was a British archaeologist who later became a citizen of the US. His excavations at Great Zimbabwe were important in showing that the site was built by the Shona peoples. He worked also in north Africa and moved to Italy in 1921 to focus on Etruscan architecture.

Quartet Books, London and elsewhere, 1979, first edition; 8vo, pp [x], 278; 25 illustrations, some as individual plates and others on the one plate; dull red cloth boards, pictorial dust wrapper, very good copy. Mediaeval European culture was Greek, Latin and arabic but the Arabic thread, as with comparable influence in mathematics and medicine, has largely been overlooked, its not being recognised that the form and content of literature largely assumed to be exclusively western owe a significant debt to this Arab heritage. The book traces the spread of this culture from the east, using a rich collection of biblical and other stories, including erotic material such as those of Joseph and Potiphar's wife, Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, Alexander the Great, and more, and draws on the great seminal tale collections such as Disciplina Clericalis and The Arabian Nights.

An account of the author's return to India, specifically to her grandparent's house in Colaba, Bombay, in 1939 as a teenager after a decade's absence and found hue changes. During the visit she goes also to Kashmir and to Tibet and spends time in Delhi and Allahabad. While in India she applied to and was accepted by Wellesley College in Massachusetts, becoming the first India student there. On independence in 1947 her father, Sir Benegal Ram Rau, became the first ambassador to Japan. After graduating fromm Wellesley, Ram Rau became a teacher and, later, a freelance writer, among other work adapting with his approval Forster's "A Passage to India" for the theatre, the work being produced in Oxford, the West End and Broadway.

Hopkinson, London, 1927, firstedition; 8vo, 150 x 200mm; pp xvi, 186 and with a 6pp publisher's catalogue of the author's books; with 67 photographs by the author on 30 plates; blue linen covers, spine gilt, very slight rubbing at the points and browning of the end papers but otherwise in very good, bright condition; presentation copy from the author with a neat hand written note on the front fly "To the Master of Christs with gratitude, good wishes & affection & as a relief from Apollinarianism from Charles E Raven Christmas 1932". The Master in question was the Scottish theologian Norman McLean, Raven then being Regius Professor of Divinity and himself becoming Master a few years later in 1939.

Routledge and Kegan Paul, London, 1964, first edition; 8vo, pp xxv, 214; nine plates; red cloth, spine gilt, very good copy in a dust wrapper slightly dust marked on the back and with a tiny nick at the head. South Uist, one of the outer Hebrides lies around 60 miles west of mainland Scotland and at the time in question was not only extremely difficult to reach but had a population just short of 6,000 of whom 60% were monolingual in Gaelic with most of the remainder bilingual in Gaelic and English. Roberts has experience building houses and the value of this work comes particularly from the practical advice, derived from his own experience and mistakes, he gives as to location, humidity, sun effects, soil characteristics, wnd, shelter and the like, much of it nto ordinarily featuring in discussions with architects or builders.
