Reed recaps the Southern position of States rights, slavery, etc. Detailed discussion of the KKK and how it saved the South from anarchy. (For sure this book will not be republished in this PC world).

Condition reflected in the price./None. ONE OF THOSE RARE CONFEDERATE TENNESSEE UNIT HISTORIES. THIS MAINLY ABOUT THE FIFTH TENNESSEE INFANTRY. Nevins I-151 "Contains some company sketches and partial muster rolls, plus a rather full history of the author's unit, the 5th Tennessee." Although a history of the 5th, there are lists of recruits from Henry County that joined other Tennessee units. An Army of Tennessee unit.

The author was a private in one of the most famous Confederate cavalry units, the Ninth Virginia Cavalry, initially led by W.H.F. Lee. His discussion of the battle at Gettysburg is humorous as he states the Confederates could have routed Meade by the end of the second day. He "defeats and discounts" three of the best and fresh Union corps with a couple of general sentences. Approximately half the book deals with the War, the rest his post-War career. A scarce Neale. He was a 20 year old farmer when he enlisted in July, 1862. He was listed as wounded at Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864. The 33rd first served with the Army of the Potomac through Chancellorsville and gettysburg. It then transferred West where it served under Sherman for the rest of the War. Ryder remained in service throughout the War and mustered out in June 1865. Not a common title. Dornbusch I-294.
