Description:
Cambridge, Maryland: Cornell Maritime Press, 1949. 277 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "The year 1809 found shipping in the young American Republic paralyzed by the Embargo Act of Thomas Jefferson, its President. From this beginning, Mr. Rabl has unfolded a thrilling tale of men, ships and privateering in the War of 1812 - the story of Eduardo Chavez who dreamed of a ship that would outsail and out-maneuver any ship afloat; of Captain Thomas Boyle, America's greatest daredevil and fun-loving Irishman, who sent his Proclamation to Great Britain's rulers putting the United Kingdom and Ireland under rigorous blockade; of beautiful and vivacious Rose LeCompte who loved a man she could not have. But most of all, it is the story of the clipper ship, Chasseur, the visions and the heartaches that went into her building, the thrills and excitement of her battles as a privateer and her many episodes as a merchantman in the China trade. With Baltimore as the focal point during the War of 1812, this story… Read More

Description:
Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1991. 345 pp, 9" H. "In this transcription of the Medicine Rite, the most sacred ritual of the now vanished Winnebago Indians, anthropologist Paul Radin captured a poetic source of profound importance to the understanding of mystical experience. Performed by medicine men upon the initiation of a member to their cult, this secret rite recapitulated the mythic origins and heroes of the Winnebago while integrating those present with the ancestral forces. The rite imparted not only knowledge about life, death, and rebirth within the community, but also insights into our potential, as human beings, of living with genuine dignity on this earth. (This book) offers an authentic rendering of these prayers and ceremonial procedures and guides readers in appreciating their rich symbolism. This text, recorded in 1908 through an interpreter, is the recollection of Jasper Blowsnake, a former medicine man hesitant to commit the once mortal sin of… Read More

London: John Murray, 1968. 345 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w plates, double page map. "(T)races the history of Rhodesia from earliest times up to the referendum of 1922 when the Rhodesian electorate decided to seek independence under the Crown, rather than accept the South African Government's generous terms of union. (Ransford) begins with a study of the early bushmen and their art. He then moves from this 'golden age' to the growth of the Monomatapan empire - which is best remembered for its great Zimbabwe-type stone buildings - and to its subjection by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century. Here he introduces his main theme: that throughout its history Rhodesia has been governed by minority elites. The Portuguese were succeeded by the enigmatic Rozwi theocrats, and they in turn by the conquering Matabele who fled from Shaka's wrath in Zululand. It was during the Matabele ascendency that British missionaries first established themselves in the country, and the… Read More
