Description:
1824. RAFINESQUE, C[onstantine] S. Ancient History, or Annals of Kentucky; With a Survey of the Ancient Monuments of North America, and a Tabular View of the Principal Languages and Primitive Nations of the Whole Earth. Frankfort, Ky.: Printed for the author, 1824. 1st separate ed., enlarged. 8vo. (4), 39pp. A very good copy in old half leather. Howes R-8 (conflating title). Sabin 67442. Field 1254. Rafinesque's "Ancient History" was originally written as an introduction to Marshall's "History of Kentucky" and issued separately with the addition of two pages entitled "Ethnological and Philological Table of the Primitive Nations and Languages." Rafinesque's ethnological researches and speculations antedate the formal study or science of ethnology; although they are sometimes sketchy, they reflect a liveliness and originality characteristic of most of this eccentric genius' works.
