Frontis illustration with tissue-guard is a portrait of the author. Plain brown wrapper on coverboards may be original to the book. The wrapper is split down the front spine fold. Richly illustrated with engravings; 100 illustrations in total. One illustration (Bacchus on pg. 206) was neatly cut out from book by a previous owner, but is laid inside the book. Edge of text block is marbled. On the title page there is a stamp advertising the services of Prof. F. L. Cavanagh, who provided phrenological examinations.
