Collation of set : Vol. 1 - Spain, Portugal,Belgium and Holland ; Vol. 2 - China,Japan,Persia,Arabia,Turkey,India,Egypt, Algiers, Tunisia, Tripoli : Vol. 3 - Russia, Poland, Sweeden, Denmark ; Vol. 4 - England. Three of the four volumes ( 1, 2 and 3) have been very apparently exposed to moisture resulting in warping to boards as well as soiling and wrinkling to paper. Due to tissue guards, most plates present damage only to margins and verso's of images, although in several instances, light to moderate impairment has extended into the extremity of the illustration. The Dustwrapper bears the price of $3.00, photograph of J.D. Salinger by Lotte Jacobi to rear panel. The Dustwrapper measures 3mm taller than the book, indicating that it is most probably a Second Printing dustwrapper-issued the same month as the First Printing dustwrapper. With the exceptions of the tiny differential in height and a near microscopic difference in placement of the Dollar Sign aside of the price, the First and Second Printing Dustwrappers are identical to one another. The Catcher in the Rye is a key-work of the nineteen-fifties in that the theme of youthful rebellion is first adumbrated in it, though the hero, Holden Caulfield, is more a gentle voice of protest, unprevailing in the noise, than a militant world-changer. Henry Seebohm (1832 - 1895) was an English steel manufacturer, and amateur ornithologist, oologist and traveller. Seebohm was born in Bradford. His interest in natural history led him to travel widely, in Greece, Scandinavia, Turkey, and South Africa. His expeditions to the Yenisey tundra of Siberia were described in his two most renowned books, Siberia in Europe (1880) and Siberia in Asia (1882),today widely accepted as pre-eminent works in the fields of both tavel and adventure as well as ornithology.
