Woolwich, 16 August 1847. A good one page example, 7 x 4½ inches. Jeffreys’ draft acceptance reply on verso. General Sir Edward Sabine (1788-1883), physicist, soldier and explorer; astronomer to expeditions of John Ross (1818) and William Edward Parry in search of the Northwest Passage (1819-20). Sabine researched terrestrial magnetism. He was joint commissioner with Sir John Herschel acting with the French commission to determine the difference in longitude between Paris and Greenwich. John Gwyn Jeffreys (1809-1885), conchologist, author of British Conchology, 5 vols. 1862-69.

Description:
Ghent, Wednesday one a Clock in the afternoon, undated [c.1709-12]. 2 pp. 9 x 7 inches, lower edge ragged, minor tears, lightly toned. Sabine reports which regiments are in the town, and asserts “that I am not in the least apprehensive of their surprising the Castle, or shall it be in their Power, The Magistracy and Burghers hate the very Name of a Hollander and are entirely enclin’d for us.” General Joseph Sabine (1661-1739) fought at the Siege of Namur in 1695. He subsequently served in Flanders throughout the War of Spanish Succession, commanding his Regiment at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, at the Battle of Oudenarde in 1708 and then at the Siege of Lille later that year. He was given command of the Citadel at Ghent where he had to put down a mutiny in 1712. Then in 1716 he commanded a Brigade sent to confront the Pretender's Army at Perth. Later that year he became Commander of the British Army throughout Scotland.

Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (1836 – 1895), Austrian writer and journalist, who gained renown for his romantic stories of Galician life, and the author of Venus In Furs (1869). The term masochism is derived from his name. The term masochism was invented in 1886 by the Austrian psychiatrist Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing in his seminal work, Psychopathia Sexualis. In English. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, minor blemishes. “... to show the true tendencies of the national life in Italy - and what elements of civil improvement there are in the country likely to give security of public order even amidst the crisis of a political revolution.” Count Aurelio Saffi (1819–1890), Italian politician, active during the period of Italian unification. He was an important figure in the radical republican current within the Risorgimento movement and close to its leader and chief inspiration, Giuseppe Mazzini. in 1853, Saffi fled from Italy to England for a second time and was condemned in absentia to twenty years in prison. He was appointed the first teacher of Italian at the Taylor Institute, Oxford, in 1856, and was determined, as he says in this letter, “to speak the truth concerning my oppressed, but still aspiring fatherland.”

With some old catalogue notes providing the historical background to these letters. Jules Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire (1805 – 1895), French philosopher, journalist, statesman. In 1855 he went as member of the international commission to Egypt to report on the possibility of the proposed Suez canal, and by the articles which he wrote he contributed largely to making the project popular in France. On an integral leaf is an Autograph Letter Signed “Mutter” (Sarah Austin) to “Dear Child” about St. Hilaire’s visit to London.

Bayswater, 3 April 1887. A good one page example, 7 x 4½ inches. Prosper Philippe Catherine Sainton (1813 -1890), French violinist. In 1844 he made his first appearance in England, at a Philharmonic concert directed by Mendelssohn. Settling in London, he was in 1845 appointed professor at the Royal Academy of Music. From 1848 to 1855 he was leader of the Queen's Band, and in 1862 he conducted the music at the opening of the International Exhibition. In 1860, he married the famous contralto singer, Miss Charlotte Dolby. Sir Augustus Manns (1825-1907), German conductor, cellist and violinist.

Annecy, 3 September 1893. In French. 3 x 4 inches, fine. With the orignal franked envelope. Albert Samain (1858-1900), French poet and writer of the Symbolist school. His poems were strongly influenced by those of Baudelaire and Verlaine; his works disclose a taste for indecisive, vague imagery. Samain helped found the Mercure de France, and also worked on the Revue des Deux Mondes. Samain published three volumes of verse: Le jardin de l'infante (1893), which made him famous; Aux flancs du vase (1898) and Le Chariot d'or (1901).

With a separate cabinet portrait photograph of Sanderson, by Reutlinger, Paris. Sibyl Sanderson (1864 – 1903) was a famous American operatic soprano during the Parisian Belle Époque. She was born in Sacramento, California, in the United States. After her father’s death in 1886, she and her mother moved to Paris and became transplanted socialites. Sanderson proved to be a remarkably gifted singer and began to appear on the stages of the Opéra-Comique, and later Opéra, in Paris, most notably in the works of Jules Massenet. She was his favorite soprano and appeared in the premieres of a number of his operas, the roles having been created for her unique talents (her professional debut took place in Paris in the title role in Esclarmonde).

Description:
Admiralty, 1 February 1777. 1 page 12 x 7 inches, overleaf manuscript descriptions of each man, integral address leaf, bishopmark 3/FE, impressed Admiralty seal. Light to severe staining but sound and complete. A rare Admiralty broadside, issued during the American War, offering “Protection” (valid for three months) from naval impressment to those in essential trades such as coal shipping. Each man is described: “William Armstrong Mate aged 23 years, with a Scar on his Right Cheak, fair complection, Five Foot Nine Inches height.” Workington is a town at the mouth of the River Derwent on the coast of Cumberland. The document bears a bold signture of John Montagu (1718-92), fourth Earl of Sandwich, first Lord of the Admiralty during the American War of Independence. He assisted Captain Cook in fitting out his fleet in 1778, and the Sandwich Islands [later called Hawaii] were named after him.
