IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S CLOTH BINDING, boards decorated in blind, spine gilt, all edges nicely decorated in color. Only the smallest traces of wear to binding, otherwise bright. Internally perfect, except for light soiling to final two leaves (table of contents and list of plates). Gumuchian 5016-5018, without a copy in original cloth. An excellent copy.

Paris (?): Les Iris, 1953. First and only edition of this erotic novel whose pubescent female protagonists are introduced to the worlds of heterosexuality, lesbianism, and sado-masochism. Printed on good wove paper, not yellowing or brittle at all (unusual for erotic literature of the period). Large 8vo. Original wraps. Moderate general wear to covers, internally bright and fine.

Paris: Chez Claude Barbin, 1674. A very attractive copy of the first edition of one of the most important 17th-century French novels. Complete with the final blank Ee2. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt. Wear to extremities of binding and gilding on spine somewhat abraded, but structurally solid and still attractive. Large margins. Paris: Chlendowski, 1845. Bertall. A UNIQUE SET OF BON-A-TIRER PROOFS (B.A.T.s), many signed by Bertall, of the wood-engravings used in Balzac's "Petites misères de la vie conjugale", one of the truly great 19th-century French illustrated books. This set includes 60 proofs on Chinese paper, of which 36 are SIGNED by Bertall (to confirm his approval of the final image), and one of which features a small ink sketch. (There is no record of any other impressions of any of these prints on Chinese paper, or of any signed impressions on any paper at all.) Generally in excellent condition, although a few are creased or spotted. 12.5 x 12 cm and smaller. UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT. IT IS EXTREMELY UNUSUAL TO FIND HAND-SIGNED PRINTS EARLIER THAN 1875.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of these three discourses, the last of which is an eloquent call for tolerance. 20, 241 pp. Salchli (1695-1774) was a professor at the Academie de Lausanne and a minister. He was an important precursor of the Enlightenment. Printed on fine laid paper. 8vo. Bound in original decorated boards. ENTIRELY UNCUT, with large margins. A little wear to boards (and a small piece missing from spine), ELSE FINE AND BRIGHT, a pristine copy of a rare book.

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, NEVER PUBLISHED, of this extremely rare catalogue of the books destroyed when the Palais du Conseil d'Etat burned in May, 1871. 2 leaves, 71 pp. Hundreds of 19th century and antiquarian books thoroughly described (particularly strong, as one would expect, in French history and culture). ONLY 100 COPIES PRINTED, NEVER PUBLISHED. This is furthermore a presentation copy, with a SIGNED INSCRIPTION FROM PATRICE SALIN, THE MAIN AUTHOR, to art and book expert Emile-Louis Galichon (1829-1875), director of the Gazette des Beaux Arts. Printed on good wove paper. 8vo. Uncut in original wraps. Some wear to wraps. Internally clean. Very good.

World War I interrupted the publication of this volume: the letterpress title-page says 1914, the engraved title-page says 1917, and the book was actually issued in 1921. Large 8vo.
