Founded by Mormon leaders and the Salt Lake, Garfield and Western Railway, as an alternative to the "Gentile" resorts on the Great Salt Lake, Saltair has been the most successful of all of these resorts, and now in its third incarnation, after the previous were both destroyed by fires. Saltair also played a starring role in the horror film, 'Carnival of Souls.' This color view is of Saltair II (1925-1970). "Many forms of life exist in the briny water of the lake, the chief being a brine ship about one-third inch in length. No fish are found in the lake proper but some find a habitat at the mouth of fresh water streams." - from the back.

The men are standing in front of Ackerman Printing and a tavern whose signs advertises Salt Lake Brewing's Lager Beer. The Walker Mercantile building is prominent in the background. Inscribed by the author on the front free endsheet: "Luigi Variani with best wishes from Birger Sandzen." Signed again beneath the frontis portrait. This book includes 19 Sandzen captioned lithographs and woodcuts. Begins with a three-page appreciation of Sandzen by William Allen White. This edition was limited 1050 numbered copies. Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) was a Swedish born, American artist, who is renowned for his landscape paintings and prints.

Reams in the Desert is the first book to explore the complete story behind the West's pioneer attempt at paper production. The unlikely site was a desert valley in northern Utah. Paper had been made commercially in the United States for well over a century by the time that the first paper made west of the Mississippi River emerged from the vat.
