Rare first edition of this work on Parisian prostitution, attributed to the writer and journalist Émile Marco de Sainte-Hilaire (1796–1887). The Réclamation
is presented as a letter from the prostitute Modeste Agnès to the newly-appointed Paris chief of police, Guy Delavau (1787–1874), protesting attempts by retailers to exclude prostitutes from the Palais-Royal over the forthcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.
Modeste Agnès argues that she and her colleagues have as much right to do business in the Palais-Royal as anyone else, and that they pay for the right to ply their trade. Furthermore, they attract locals, provincials, and foreigners to the area to the benefit of the local economy, since their clients spend money in cafes, and on clothes and jewellery. Very rare first edition of this highly interesting work on plague, viewed from medical, religious and political standpoints, by a lawyer from Utrera in southern Spain, written in the wake of the devastating epidemic that struck the city and province of Seville in 1649 as part of the Great Plague of Seville (1647-52) that claimed an estimated 600-700,000 lives.
After defining plague and contagion, and considering divine and human remedies against them, Salado gives a brief life of St Roch, who gained renown for healing plague victims, and of St Sebastian. He then examines the 1581 outbreak in Utrera, discusses plague in relation to sin, and details historic plagues from Biblical times onwards. The main part of the catalogue contains 356 exhibits, divided into five sections: osteology, splanchnology, neurology, sense organs, and angiology; an appendix contains 61 items prepared for examination with a microscope. A handsome copy of the 'fifth thousand' of this very successful handbook for prospective emigrants to Australia, published only six weeks after the first issue. The handbook was the work of the brothers John (b. 1821) and Samuel Sidney (1813-1883), the former having settled in New South Wales around 1838. 'It was an immediate popular success, seven 1000-copy editions being sold in five months.
