Description:
London: The Dropmore Press, 1947. (6), 66, (4) pages. 4to. First printing. This was the fourth in a series called "The Dropmore Essays." Number 420 of an edition limited to 550 copies. Letterpress printed on paper that was hand made by Portals of Whitchurch. Fine binding by Evans of Croydon: blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt; gilt dentelles; housed in a custom cardboard slipcase. Sackville-West's essay on nursery rhymes is equally serious and fun. She saw the writer of nursery rhymes as a poet-novelist, who as a "creator of characters, creator of situations, had a fine jugglery to play with. A vast population of Old Women and Little Men crept out of corners, sought in their cupboards, fired their little guns, wore cork legs which surprisingly sank in water, and found themselves in a variety of predicaments seldom equalled in life." The book is virtually as new in a clean bright dust jacket that has just a hint of tanning along the spine and a 1/8" closed… Read More

Description:
Boston, Massachusetts: Richard G. Badger, 1911. 76 pages. Rare book including photos of carved wooden statuary that were used as sidewalk advertising for cigar stores. The folk carvings included women, baseball players, policemen, etc., but the main emphasis was on native Americans--the proverbial "Cigar Store Indian." There is no credit given to photographer Jessie Tarbox Beals, but she was a friend of the author, and some of the images can be found in the Beals collection at the City Museum of New York. The book is clean and tight, with a bright cover with unrubbed gilded lettering and a small gilded taxi cab with a woman taking photos from a rear window. Corners and spine extremities are rubbed; pages lightly toned; 2 pages with short (less than 1/2 inch) closed tears. A nice copy of this highly sought after book.. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Illus. by Kate Sanborn and Jessie Tarbox Beals. 8vo - over 7Âľ" - 9Âľ" tall. Book.

Description:
Paris: Chez Sanson, 1657. Image is 8 1/8 inches by 11 inches on a folded sheet measuring 9 inches by 12 13/16 inches. Original hand-colored copper-engraved map from Sanson's atlas of maps of the Americas: L'Amerique en Plusieurs Cartes. It is a map of the Viceroyalty of Peru that displays the Amazon River and its many tributaries. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) was the official geographer for the king of France. His map of Peru and the Amazon became the standard that was copied by almost all geographers/cartographers--even reproduced by Bion for his 1700 treatise on globes. Cintra and Oliveira argue that Sanson's map was a scientific one that holds up well, even when compared to 21st century maps of the region. The map is in about very good condition: clean, with bright original outline color; minimal foxing ; some edgewear and soiling in the margins. . First Edition. Single Sheet. Very Good-. 8 1/8 inches by 11 Inches. Map.

Description:
Fairfax, VA: Hazel/Peterson Companies, 1987. v, 112; iv, 31; iii, 34 pages. As part of its effort to build a shopping mall on the William Center Tract next to the Manassas Battlefield National Park, the Hazel/Peterson Companies commissioned historian James A. Schaefer to prepare a report on the Civil War Battle of Second Manassas. His report is part one of this book. In 1988 Schaeffer, having realized that he had been duped by Hazel/Peterson, reversed his position and joined the opposition to the mall. Part 2 of the book, "Counting the Fallen", was written by James Rea; it attempts to determine whether soldiers killed in the battle were buried on the Williams Center tract. Part 3 examines the history of Theophile Poilpot's long-missing panorama painting of the battle. The book, intended only for the local campaign to build the mall, was not widely circulated and is now scarce. The book is clean and tight.. First Edition. Paperback.
