Rangin (1756-1835) was the son of a Persian nobleman who served in various armies on the sub-continent before turning to the trade in horses; this work, his study of the horse in the Muslim area of Hindustan in northwestern India, was written sometime before 1835 when the author died. Miles Saint-Memin and the Neoclassical Profile Portrait in America 277: "Although the engraving was made in 1802, the version with the inscription 'Col. William Duane' must date after 1808, when Duane became a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army; he also held the rank of colonel from 1813 to 1815. Duane helped Benjamin Franklin Bache publish the Philadelphia Aurora, the principal voice of the Jeffersonian Republicans. His paper was responsible for stemming the tide of war against france in the late 1790s and contributed greatly to Thomas Jefferson's election in 1800." Hunting deer, wild turkey, and waterfowl in the area between Orangeburg and Charleston, South Carolina, mostly in the 1910s. Not in Phillips. Casada 545: "Two of the twenty-two stories in this rare book deal with turkey hunting." Very good copy. An uncommon book in trade and quite scarce in dust jacket, the best we've encountered. Original cloth-backed decorated boards, decorated dust jacket. (2813).

Bogata, (Colombia): Imprenta de el Neo-Granadino, 1857. First edition. 8vo. (4), 99 pp. Stirring liberal essays in the conflict between the Roman Catholic clergy's power and influence and that of Colombia's young and frequently changing democracy. Editor Samper (1828-1888, journalist and prolific author of literary as well as political works) published the essays in his Neo-Grenadino and collected them here for the long-fought battle. OCLC locates one copy (Duke). Later black quarter-calf and marbled boards and endpapers, gilt spine title, original green printed wrappers bound in. Very good. (1792).

Original oval photograph, approx. 7 x 5 in., matted. Samson is shown as an older man, in 3/4 view, turned slightly to his right, and dressed in a suitcoat and bow tie. A very good image. Rev. Samson was born in Harvard, Massachusetts in 1819, and graduated from Brown University in 1839. He completed further studies at Newton Theological Seminary and graduated from there in 1843. He served as pastor of the E Street Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. from 1843-1850, and again from 1852-1859. Some brief biographies mention that he was the clergyman who married Mathew Brady and his wife Juliette [Julia] Handy, although we have been unable to verify this. Between 1859-1871, he was President of Columbian College in the city, shepherding its growth through the Civil War. He later served as President of Rutgers Female College in New York City. He was the author of several books on moral and intellectual philosophy, including spiritualism and spiritual manifestations.

Contributors to this anthology of grizzly bear hunting include Annabel, Frank Hibben, Jack O'Connor, Elmer Keith, Hornaday, and Saxton Pope. Very good. Gilt-stamped decorated red bonded leather, publisher's slipcase. (7261).

(St. Paul, MN: The author, 1900. First edition. 8vo. 56 pp. Apparently not recorded in Dornbusch. Historian F. Stanley's copy, with his New Mexico collection stamp and a value of "$10" in ink. Relatively uncommon, OCLC locates 11 copies. Original printed cream wrappers (darkened, a little soiling and wear at extremities). Very good.

A group of U.S. Naval Station press release photos, 35 black & white images, 8 x 10 in., all stamped on verso by the U.S. Naval Photographic Center, J.E. Pfeifer, photographer. Leo [Leveo] Sanchez, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity, was responsible for assisting Youth Coordinators who were developing "comprehensive youth opportunity programs of employment, education, and recreation for [their] community." A manual produced by the President's Council on Youth Opportunity, chaired by Vice Pres. Spiro Agnew, and published in Washington, DC in March 1969 lists his contact information. Scarce printing of an American transformation book. The verses give instructions on how to proceed with the foldings.
