Description:
Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2000. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine Condition/Fine. Clean unmarked pages, firmly bound; slight creasing to top of spine. A nicely kept copy. This is a well-researched account of a likely scientific fraud by J W Heslop Harrison, a Professor of Botany in the North of England, who apparently transplanted specimens to the island of Rum and later 'discovered' them as new and unusual finds. The book also throws doubt on the published results of an experiment performed by the professor to show that chemical induction of mutation caused the white form of the peppered moth to become darker in industrial areas. It was on the basis of this experiment and other work that J W Heslop Harrison gained election to the Royal Society in the 1920's. The book reads like a good detective story and is highly recommended to those with or without a scientific background. (Reader review) 276 pages. Quantity Available: 1. About the book: Harvey Sachs?s edition of Arturo Toscanini?s letters, wisely introduced, carefully presented and finely annotated, is one of the most absorbing books of its kind that I have read in years." (Max Loppert, BBC Music Magazine) "[Toscanini?s] alleged virtues -- fanatical dedication, unprecedented standards of accuracy, utter commitment to canonical composers like Beethoven, Wagner, and Verdi, and perfectionist demands on orchestral players -- became vices, depending on which side of the debate one was listening to. The argument was bound up with the myths surrounding his personality: he was seen from… Read More

Amberley Publishing, 2015. First Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New. A clean bright copy, in as new condition. Fidel Castro (1926-2016) was a towering figure, the leader of Cuba's revolution and one of the world's last Communist strongmen; but his fiercely defended privacy meant that biographers could barely scratch the surface of his personal life. Here Juan Sanchez, once Castro¿s bodyguard, but later persecuted by the regime, shares his intimate knowledge of this 'man of the people' who amassed vast personal wealth (partly through government-sanctioned drug-running) and enjoyed a lavish lifestyle including a luxury yacht and secret island marina. 288 pages. Tate Publishing, 2010. Hardcover. Good Condition. Contents are clean bright and unmarked, 1" brown stain and a few splash marks to closed page block, very noticeable scratches on rear cover, rubbing to corners. Published to coincide with the 2010 major exhibition at Tate Modern, the imagery collected here, ranging from the 1870s to the present day, presents an alternately shocking, illuminating, and witty perspective on subjects both iconic and taboo. From shortly after the invention of photography, hidden cameras in public places and voyeuristic treatments of sexuality raised questions about the new medium's uses that are still rehearsed today. The invasive techniques of paparazzi, amateur shots of disasters from the Hindenburg to 9/11, police surveillance photography and the recent trend of self-documentation of sex, crime and other private acts are all examined and explored by leading critics, alongside the work of some of the leading artists of the past 100 years.
