S. l. (Columbus, Indiana): The Cerealine Mfg. Co., 1888. Very good. Early printing, n. d. (late 1880s); oblong 5 3/4 x 8 1/2; pp. [16]; stapled pictorial wraps; illustrated with monochrome drawings (presumably after original engravings by H. F. Farny); small, closed cuts to tips of spine, else minor wear; in very good condition. Typical of cereal manufacturers' advertisements of the 19th century, the return to nature with healthy food meant "a return for white people to an earlier existence, in which 'natural peoples' did the work of procuring food." Thus, the companies often connected their products with Native Americans. The Cerealine Company excelled at it, including publishing the current booklet, which was to be sent to their customers and which claimed to be the legend of "Hiawatha's Fasting." Each page, along with touting the benefits of Cerealine Flakes, also included short passages from Longfellow's "Hiawatha." Though this printing… Read More
