Originally produced for the John Tallis part-work "Tallis's Illustrated London; in Commemoration of the Great Exhibition of All Nations in 1851. Forming a Complete Guide to The British Metropolis and its Environs" (London : 1851-1852). Steel line engraving on paper. Later hand colour. Engraved surface 97 x 132mm (approx. 3-5/8" x 5-1/8"). A couple of tiny spots, but otherwise in very good state. A guaranteed genuine antique print. Adams 215/137.

London : Poetry, 1939. The first issue of this legendary magazine, originally called simply "Poetry", the first series of which ran until 1951. This copy signed next to their contributions by nine of the original contributors - Audrey Beecham, Dorian Cooke, Walter de la Mare, Lawrence Durrell (twice), Clifford Dyment, Philip O'Connor, Herbert Read, Edwin Smith and Stephen Spender (twice). Other contributors to a highly impressive first issue include George Barker, Gavin Ewart, John Gawsworth, J. F. Bailrigg, Lancaster : Continuum, [1971]. First edition. An anthology which commences pugnaciously with a quotation from Ho Chi Minh - "the poet also should know how to lead an attack". The opening editorial continues on the theme of dark mills, cramped houses, capitalist exploitation, dark and satanic schools, and even universities - "slave markets for the technocrats" - and "places where humanity is denied, where the potential for love, creativity and joy is suppressed for the sake of profit". London : Edward Moxon, 1855. First edition. With the ownership signature of Tennyson's sister Matilda Tennyson (1816-1915), and further inscribed "Leonora M. Pinwill [Leonora Marian Pinwill (1842-1910)] from Matilda Tennyson July. 28th 1856". Matilda, perhaps the favourite sister, was known to the family primarily as Tilly - but also as "The Empress Maud". Her nickname is bestowed on this major collection of eight poems (Tennyson's own favourite to the end of his days) which added not only "Come into the garden, Maud", but also "Half a league onward", "Theirs not to reason why" and "Cannon to the right of them" to the universal canon of most quoted lines. The parts in first state, with the "rustic" heading to the first chapter, the inadvertent "Mr. Pitt" rather than "Sir Pitt" on p.453, and the notorious "Marquis of Steyne" wood-engraving (p.336) - an illustration said to have been suppressed, under threat of court action, for its allegedly libellous resemblance to the Third Marquis of Hertford.
