London: Edward Moxon and Co, 1867. Very good. Hardcover. Illustrated by Gustave Doré. Folio. Steel engraved frontispiece and eight steel-engraved plates with tissue guards. Pleasantly bound in full scarlet morocco, the spine in seven compartments, gilt, with raised bands. The boards with gilt borders, titles, and an inner gilt rectangle with fleurs-de-lis at each corner and enclose an additional 77 fleurs-de-lis. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled paper endpapers. All edges gilt. The binding has a trace of soil. The rear board is similarly tooled. At first we thought it had been expertly rebacked, but now think it was originally bound from separate skins, and, given its size, this is not unexpected. There is the usual light foxing else this is a very good exemplar in a nicely executed, but unsigned, binding. The illustrations were reprinted in 1869 as part of the Idylls of the King set Howey F-170.
