Description:
Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier,, 1687. With many arresting engravings First Amsterdam edition, second overall after the first published in Paris the previous year, with a intriguing contemporary provenance. This uncommon account of the author's first expedition to Siam via the Cape Colony is profusely illustrated with engravings including of a "large lizard", dragon boats, and the king of Siam riding an elephant in front of his supplicants. This copy is inscribed in French opposite the additional engraved title, "This book belongs to me, Jean Paul Veranj, this month of June 1701. Signed at Rome in the time of the conclave of you, monsieur, your very humble and obedient servant. At the moment when you have just ordered me the agreements between the house of M. the Governor and M. the Marquis de la Chape. May I not fail". Veranj's clerical superior ("Monsieur") was perhaps one of the 58 cardinals who met in Rome to elect Pope Clement XI in 1700. Guy Tachard (1651-1712) was one of six Jesuit fathers who set… Read More

Description:
Paris: Libraire de l. Hachette et Cie,, 1866. First edition of Taine's travelogue of his visit to Italy in 1864. "Taine had not only prepared his trip by extensive reading about Italian history and art, he also spent long hours in the libraries after his return before turning his journal notes into a book. Still, he maintained the style of immediate descriptions and delivered his historical explanations as the instantaneous reflections he had during his visits of cities, museums and churches. By characterizing and presenting his study as untouched thought he followed the genre of travel descriptions" (Feest, p. 95). Provenance: with the bookplate to the front pastedowns of Noel Pinelli (1881-1970), the minister of the merchant navy under the Vichy regime and a strong supporter of Marshal Pétain. His slip of handwritten notes on the edition is tipped in following the front free endpaper of vol. I, as with other books from his library. 2 volumes, octavo (213 x 133 mm). Description:
Paris: Libraire Hachette et Cie,, 1876-94. The effects of centralization First editions of the author's magnum opus, a monumental and controversial work which argued that modern France is best understood as the result of a consistent process of centralization through its history. Due to the long publication period over near two decades, the work is rarely encountered as a complete set of first editions. Introduced by the Bourbons, centralization was "strengthened by the French Revolution, which destroyed the natural provinces and replaced them by departments which were mere administrative appendixes of the central government; in the hands of Napoleon Bonaparte the centralized administrative structure was an efficient tool of internal control and external conquest, but it became an unwieldy bureaucratic machine as soon as it was deprived of Napoleon's ruthless energy" (Encyclopedia of Philosophy). 6 volumes, octavo (225 x 137 mm). Kobe: Tamamura, Photographer,, 1907. First edition, first printing, of this scarce photobook, with a single copy recorded on WorldCat (Museum Rietberg, Switzerland), and copies likewise seldom encountered in commerce. The high-quality captioned photographs show views of old commercial streets including Motomachi and the Kobe Bund, as well as waterfalls, Shinto shrines, the Moon Temple, the bustling theatre quarter, the city's large Buddhist idol erected in 1892, and the picturesque Himeji Castle. Takagi Teijiro (born c.1875) studied under the celebrated photographer Kozaburo Tamamura, managing the Tamamura branch store in Kobe until the 20th century when he became its owner and assumed the right to use the Tamamura name. He is known to have produced at least 30 different photobooks in English introducing Japanese culture and customs. Takagi continued to use the Tamamura name until 1914 when he began trading as the T. Takagi Photographic Studio & Art Gallery. His studio operated until at least 1929.… Read More

[New Haven, CT:] , May 1937. The author's retained copy of his dissertation The author's retained copy of his dissertation, with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, "F. Tamagna 2790 Yale Station New Haven Conn.", some underlining to the foreword, and the occasional correction to the text. This dissertation formed the basis of Tamagna's best-known work, Banking and Finance in China (1942), a comprehensive survey of modern Chinese banks up to the early 1940s and their important role in supporting China's war against the Japanese invasion. Mainly the result of a personal investigation conducted by Tamagna in Japan, Manchukuo and China from March to November 1936, "the purpose of [Tamagna's dissertation] is an objective research into the current methods and possible developments of credit activities in China" (p. ii). Split into three parts, the first is a historical and political introduction to the three money markets in China (which Tamagna denotes as the traditional, the modern, and… Read More

Description:
Shanghai: China United Press,, 1935. First edition in English, first impression, of this comprehensive propagandistic account of the reconstruction of China since the foundation of the Republic of China in January 1912. The work was simultaneously published in French and German. Tang (1901-1970) was a journalist and politician who, in 1929, was appointed chief of the Communications Office to Europe for the Republic. Educated in England and Vienna, Tang was appointed as an adviser to the Foreign Ministry in 1933 and was influential in creating an international image of life in China, both through the China Today Series, begun in 1933, of which this is Volume III, and his English Encyclopedia of Modern China. In March 1940, at the establishment of Wang Jingwei's pro-Japanese collaborationist government in Nanjing, Tang assumed formal office in the regime as director of the International Publicity Bureau, until its collapse in 1945. The work provides a fascinating insight into how the newly established… Read More

Description:
Beijing: Renmin tiyu chubanshe,, 1976. A well-preserved and eye-catching Cultural Revolution poster celebrating the virtues of revolutionary enthusiasm and dedication in China's youth. Although this was one of 100,000 copies produced for the first printing, only a fraction survive in collectable condition. Throughout the Mao period, propaganda posters and publications portrayed teenagers and young adults as the builders of China's socialist tomorrow, urging them to dedicate themselves to making revolution in the face of all adversity. During the Cultural Revolution, after the heady radicalism of the Red Guard movement, Mao sanctioned the rustication of large numbers of students to the countryside to restore order in urban areas. Posters such as the present dramatic example aimed to pacify a youth generation feeling increasingly disillusioned with and alienated from the Communist project. Though not marked as such, the present copy is from the library of Paul Pickowicz (b. 1945), a notable scholar of… Read More
