Description:
Duckworth & Co. London: Duckworth & Co., 1903 8vo., blue cloth, ruled and lettered in black to upper cover and spine, with device to foot; pp. [v], vi-ix, [iv], 2-302, [ii]; cloth a little rubbed and darkened, with spine ends compressed; endpapers browned, offset, and slightly foxed; a few spots, marks and corner creases within the text; edges a trifle dust soiled; a very sturdy copy, nonetheless.  First UK edition, translated from the Russian by R. E. C. Long, who also provides the Preface. This example in a variant publisher's cloth binding, lacking the four-page publisher's catalogue sometimes found in other examples.  Born in 1860, Tchekhoff began his career as a doctor, though he published a number of comic sketches and commentaries on everyday life in journals and newspapers in St Petersburg before he completed his education. The stories included in this collection are among the longest of his short works, and include In Exile, Two Tragedies, and Sleepyhead.… Read More

There is a flyer where presumably the previous owner obtained the signatures. 2. The Path to Power (1995) - double signed by both Margaret and Dennis Thatcher inscribed to a previous owner. 3. The Collected Speeches (1997) signed by Margaret Thatcher without dedication. A difficult title to find signed. 4. Statecraft (2002) signed by Margaret Thatcher without dedication. Description:
Selwyn & Blount. London: Selwyn & Blount, 1917 Thin 8vo, drab publisher's boards with printed paper label to spine; outer edge untrimmed; pp. [vi], 7-63, [i]; with frontis photogravure portrait of the poet behind mounted tissue guard, the photograph taken by Duncan Williams; a good to very good copy of a scarce work, boards a little scratched and rubbed, browned along the backstrip with some pushing and chipping to spine tips; pages 33-63 evenly toned, perhaps due to the change in paper stock with tissue a little more so; gutter cracked at centre, but holding firm; review clipping loosely inserted. First edition of this collection of poems, published towards the end of the First World War. Although considered a war poet, Thomas' poems seldom dealt with his experiences of his time at the front. Instead, many of his writings focus on his experiences of the English countryside - the farms, animals and birds he encountered before his time in the army. This volume is dedicated to his friend Robert Frost -… Read More

Selwyn & Blount. London: Selwyn & Blount, 1918 8vo., publisher's paper-covered board with paper label printed in black to spine; outer edges untrimmed; pp. [v], vi-vii, [i], 9-95, [i], [1]-8, [ads.]; a good to very good copy, the boards rubbed and creased with the paper beginning to peel in places (repaired to upper edge of front board); a couple of ink stains to lower board; paper label chipped and creased, a little loss to head; endpapers offset; pages evenly browned; half title with small closed tear to upper margin. First edition, on poor quality wartime paper. Eckert notes that this book is "obviously a wartime production, of poor paper and binding" Edward Thomas, who also wrote under the penname Edward Eastaway, began life as a biographer, nature and travel writer, and only began to diversify into poetry - which he called 'the highest form of literature' - at the age of 36. It was after he had moved, together with his family, to Steep in Hampshire that he began to publish his verses. Just one… Read More

Description:
William Heinemann. London: William Heinemann (1935). First UK edition of this classic anti-war novel with the striking dust wrapper. It is in very good condition. The wrapper is mostly complete. There is wear to the corners and spine ends. There is a tear to the bottom of the spine that goes through the Heinemann logo although it is firmly attached and presents well in brodart. The book itself is very clean, sturdy and square with no foxing or other marks. Overall a very good copy. The author worked as an official war correspondent during the war. He wrote many novels of note during the 20's and 30's but became preoccupied with his hatred of war and violence. He then released this, his polemic on the first world war, released at a time when the second world war appeared increasingly likely.  . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1935.
