Boston: Sabbath School Society, 1867. First. Hard Cover. Rebound by one of the best restorers. Square and tight./None.. A special book on Black units in the Civil War. One brother being a chaplain in a Black Regiment. This was James, who served in the Deep South and later at Key West. He was on Ships Island, near Mobile and likely near Biloxi. He died very quickly, likely yellow fever, while in Key West. He was a dedicated chaplain. The second brother, Edward, was a member of the 57th Mass, Burnside's Corps. He was musket shot (6/17/1864) and died 6/19/1864 at Petersburg. He was previously wounded at North Anna. A very rare narrative. Two portraits of brothers.

Only two stickers in the book, no stamps noted, a presentation gift label on the front gluedown and Read's bookplate on the ffep. The book has been used, but not abused./None.. Very scarce Navy manual. Book may have its origin with a manual by Totten in 1841. Full of navy jargon. Gives the basics of seamanship along with a glossary of terms (much needed). Lengthy book of 449 pages. The signature is of John J. Read, U.S. Navy. Attended the Naval Academy and graduated in 1861. Assigned to Farragut's ship, the Hartford for two years. Served in all the blockading squadrons during the War. Remained in service and retired as a Rear Admiral. Nevins I-236: "Contains technical details on seamanship as taught at the Naval Academy during the Civil War; also includes a glossary of terms.".
