Description:
New York: For D.T. Valentine's Manual for 1861 by Geo Haywood, 1861. Disbound. Very good. The hand-colored, lithographed map image measures 22" x 16.5" and has a 7/8" margin at top, a 5/8" margin on the right and bottom, and a 1/8" margin along most of the left edge where it had been trimmed when bound into David T. Valentine's Manual of the Common Council of the City of New York. It is oriented with north to the right. Hachures show relief, and military units are depicted in red and blue. The map was said to have been "copied from an original map kindly loaned to the compiler by Mr. A. Suart." There is some light toning along the binding folds and sheet edges. Some of the folds have short splits. There is a small (1/4") hole above the 's' in "Hudson's" and a ¾" closed tear at the left edge of the Hudson River. On 16 November 1776, the Hessian General Wilhelm von Knyphausen and his army of 8,000 German mercenaries and British regulars attacked Fort Washington (now the location of Bennet Park… Read More

Berlin (today, Otoe), Nebraska, 1913. Unbound. Very good. This grouping contains five real photograph postcards (RPPCs) by Miller Talmadge documenting the tornado that destroyed much of Berlin (now renamed Otoe) on Easter Sunday, 23 March 1913. The tornado was the longest continuous of a swarm of six storms that raged through Iowa and Nebraska that day. This category 4 tornado on the Fujita scale began northwest of Syracuse, Nebraska and ended in Mills County, Iowa. It killed 18 people, 12 in Berlin alone, and did over $250,000 in damage to the town (over $3.5 million in today's dollars). All in nice shape; none sent through the mail. Over 140 people were killed during this swarm of six tornados. . Description:
Lake Charles, Louisiana, 1907. Unbound. Very good.
This two-page letter from Hig to Jim is datelined "Lake Charles La 4-28,07". In nice shape. A transcript will be provided.
In the letter, Hig (possibly a traveling salesman) advises his old friend Jim to hold on to stock he owns controlling some property in Louisiana's "Orange Land".
"When I first came here I made a drive over pt. of the 'Orange Lands.' The most of it is good rice land, and rice land is on a boom. The Beaumont Oil boom is extended into this country: possibly there is oil under the orange land, if so and it is found the land will be worth a good deal. From what I know . . . I do not think it has any present value. The land is encumbered for all it is worth. I do not think you can sell the stock for 1.00 a share. If it was mine I would keep it for 'futures', for two reasons: one is because you will have to, and another is by a turn of a card it may be worth 100 - Aya! 1000. etc. on the dollar. . .. Now Jim don't misunderstand me. I do… Read More
