Description:
Firenze: Edizioni della Meridiana, 2007. First printing. 71 pp., 9 x 9 inches. Sewn signatures glued into printed card covers. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs throughout. Text in Italian. As new. An exploration of childhood, and the transformation of memory into art. Thirty-eight photographs from filmmaker Andrei TarkovskyÂ’s childhood, focusing on his family and their modest home, are interwoven with twenty-one photographs from the filming of The Mirror, whose characters and locations recreate or reinvent that childhood world. In some cases, we see scenes from the film juxtaposed with earlier images on which they were clearly modeled; the varying responses evoked by the two kinds of images open up an ambiguous emotional space, which is perhaps the space that autobiographical art inhabits. The photographs are prefaced with two short essays by Andrei (written in 1962), and accompanied by excerpts from his father ArsenyÂ’s poems (translated into Italian by Andrei and others). A deeply… Read more

Description:
New York: Century Co., 1900. First printing. 7 x 10 inches; 158 pages (numbered 163–320), preceded by 24 and followed by 56 pages of ads. Sewn signatures glued into printed wrappers. A very good copy, with some loss to the spine of the cover, but front and back covers complete and attached; one page with a short closed tear at the top from being roughly opened, but not affecting the text, and one small excision from an ad at the rear. The exceedingly uncommon first printing of TeslaÂ’s most famous article — “Illustrated by the writerÂ’s electrical experiments, now first published” — with early discussions of robotics and the harnessing of solar energy. Illustrated with three diagrams and ten stunning black and white photographs. Though the article is occasionally found in bound volumes of the magazine or as extracted pages, the unbound single issue is rarely found intact. “So we find that the three possible solutions of the great problem of increasing human energy are answered by the three… Read more

Description:
St. Louis, MO: Author, n.d. (circa 1991). First printing. 43 pp., 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Photocopied pages, stapled into printed self-wrappers. Illustrated. A tiny touch of rust to staples, otherwise fine. A scarce compilation, with only one institutional holding, at UC Berkeley. An interesting networking and research document: a catalogue of audio and video tapes about, articles by, print interviews with, and articles about Leary in the possession of the compiler, and offered for trade. ”The purpose of this inventory is to collect and disseminate print and media information about Timothy Leary. Copies of tapes and articles listed can be traded on an equal time / page count basis for articles and tapes not listed. Nothing in this inventory is for sale and no offer to buy anything should be inferred.”

Description:
Harmondsworth, UK: Penguin Books, 1972. First printing. 419 pp., 4.25 x 7.25 inches. Perfect-bound in printed card covers. With six black-and-white reproductions. Pages evenly browned, and spine creased at center (where the section of photographs is bound in), but a tight, clean, and mostly unopened copy. An uncommon and useful collection. “Penguin critical anthologies is a series collecting criticism on major English, American and European writers. Each volume contains a full selection from the writer on his own art, contemporary reception, later criticism and (in each case the longest section) modern critical discussions and analyses. The editor contributes introductions, a table of dates, a bibliography and a full glossarial index. The anthologized passages range in length from a paragraph to a complete essay, and the principle has been to encourage the widest possible range of opinion, critical viewpoint and method.”
