  • Quantity available: 1
B.J. Holdsworth, London., 1826. Second edition. Small octavo. Two volumes in one: pp xx, 202; [ii], 324. Frontispiece silhouette portrait with facsimile inscription. Period binding of full dark purple diced calf with raised bands, gilt decorations and rules, red leather spine label, edges and endpapers marbled. On the title page is the ownership signature, dated 1826, of Jemima Thompson who became better-known under her married named Jemima Luke as a writer of hymns, religious studies and biographies. At the time of the signature she was 13 years old and this is the age at which she first published some of her verses, anonymously, in the magazine the Juvenile Friend. It is perhaps not too much of a speculation to suggest that Jane Taylor's work, which includes a number of hymns, was one of the sources of Luke's inspiration. Also on the title page is the ownership inscription, dated 1894, of another Thompson family member.Covers slightly rubbed at edges. Very good.
