Description:
Zanzibar: Printed Privately, 1944. The hand-numbered, limited, privately printed issue of the first edition. Half leather. Lillibullero or The Golden Road contains the authorÂ’s reminiscences of the colorful Tich Miles in the Northern Frontier District of Kenya in the first half of the twentieth century. Though certainly not common (the book can be fairly readily found in first and later editions) we have not previously encountered a copy thus – the numbered and limited issue of the first edition. This copy is hand numbered on the copyright page “No. 14” of 100 copies privately printed in Zanzibar in 1944, and is finely bound in half green morocco over green cloth boards with raised spine bands, gilt print and rules, head and foot bands, gilt top edge, and marbled endpapers. The author, Eric Aldhelm Torlogh Dutton (1895-1973) was a British veteran, civil servant, and writer. Dutton was educated at Oxford and served during the First World War in Gallipoli. He passed the Indian Civil Service… Read More

Description:
London, Horbury & San Diego: Rickaro Books and Churchill Book Collector, 2019. First, limited, and numbered edition. Hardcover. This is the first, limited, and hand-numbered edition of an essay presenting a previously unrecorded letter by T. E. Lawrence. In 2018, the subject letter, penned in 1925 entirely in T. E. LawrenceÂ’s hand, was discovered laid into copy “50” of the 1935 British limited issue of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Lawrence wrote this letter while posted to the Royal Air Force RAF Cadet College at Cranwell, where he completed the famous 1926 “Subscribers'” or “Cranwell” edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. This letter consists of 22 lines written by Lawrence on the blank verso of an RAF “Application for Mechanical Transport.” Lawrence remains a remarkably enigmatic figure. We investigate his character and his exploits though his published works - which span the WWI Arab revolt and life inside the inter-war RAF to crusader castles and ancient Greek translation to technical manuals… Read More

Description:
New York: The Macmillan Company , 1954. First U.S. edition. Hardcover. This is a jacketed copy of the first state of the first American edition. Per OÂ’Brien (A247), the binding and dust jacket are both identical to those of the first English edition, featuring the English publisherÂ’s name – “Blackwell” – on the jacket and binding spines. The sheets are also from the British publisher, the first state of the American edition denoted by the title page (featuring the name of the U.S. publisher, “The Macmillan Company”) being “tipped onto a stub of original English edition title page.” Condition is near fine in a very good plus dust jacket. The navy cloth binding is unfaded, clean, square, and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. We note only a few trivial blemishes and a touch of wrinkling at the spine ends. The contents are likewise clean with no previous ownership marks. A hint of spotting appears confined to the endpapers and page edges, which also show mild age-toning. Apart… Read More

Description:
Salisbury: Castle Hill Press, 2016. First edition. Full leather. This is the first and limited edition of the first version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom intended for general publication. It was prepared in autumn 1922 by T. E. Lawrence and his literary mentor and friend, Edward Garnett, abridged from the 1922 ‘OxfordÂ’ text. Fittingly, it was the final act of outstanding editorial scholarship and fine press publication by LawrenceÂ’s official biographer, Jeremy Wilson (1944-2017) that rescued this text from oblivion. This copy is hand-numbered “4” by Wilson on the limitation page and signed by Wilson at the end of the Introduction. This numbered and handsomely bound limited edition is a lovely book about one of the 20th century's most strikingly beautiful books. In 1932, T. E. This volume brings together letters about the translation and publication of the 1932 Bruce Rogers Odyssey. The publisher of this limited edition was Castle Hill Press, the premier editors and fine press publishers of material by and about T. E. Lawrence, founded by LawrenceÂ’s official biographer, Jeremy Wilson (1944-2017). Condition is very good. The pamphlet is complete, with both original binding staples intact and no loss, tears, or appreciable wear, no spotting, and no previous ownership marks. The chief defects are some soiling… Read More
