Taken in black and white, it reveals Virgil Thomson at a ripe old age of 87 years and he looks much younger, except for his eyes which look just a bit tired! Fine for framing, he pens the inscription on the printed couch, "For... Cordially " and signed in full "Virgil Thomson" Autograph

Description:
He writes in full, "I would be very glad to become a member of the Honorary Committee of the American Theatre Wing for the presentation of the 'Tonys', and trust that this letter does not arrive too late. I was unable to answer it before now...." He signs in full in a bold hand in pencil, "James Thurber". This is a memorable letter for it's theater association. Three repairs with tape on verso to fold tears, two at left margins, third at the bottom. Some soiling. This letter was written in the year his collection of fables, "Further Fables for Our Time" was published (1956). In 1960, Thurber' play, "A Thurber Carnival" received a Tony Awards Special Award recognizing Thurber as writer and Burgess Meredith as director. Autograph

Description:
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED. Erte comments on the illustrations chosen for his costume book in this Autograph Letter Signed, in English, 2 separate folio pp with a 3 separate page folio addendum, all on printed "Erte" stationery, Paris, France, May, 7 1979 with signed transmittal envelope. Erte critiques the illustrations to be included in "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," published in 1979 by Dover (reprinted in 2016). He gives detailed notes on the costume selection and placement to Stanley Applebaum, Editor-in-Chief at Dover. "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," is a collection of 49 of Erte's exotic and historical costume designs for theater productions (and for well-known theater personalities), ballets, Folies-Bergere, and the like from 1911-1975. Included in the book are designs for a fan bearing slave girl, worshipper of Horus, wife of Russian Boyar, Ceres, a mermaid, and a gypsy dancer. The published book includes changes Erte listed in our letter. For example, the cover shows… Read More

Description:
Tombaugh draws the diameters of Earth and Mars to illustrate the planets' comparative sizes. Earth's diameter is 7900 miles against Mars diameter of 4215 miles. On his Mars diagram, Tombaugh draws what would seem to be his understanding of the pitted Martian surface. His observations of Mars led him to conclude that Mars had been hit by asteroids causing observable craters due to the planet's proximity to the asteroid belt. The Mariner 4 space probe affirmed his hypotheses. The astronomer best known for identifying Pluto has signed, "Clyde W . Tombaugh" in a bold hand. A fine, visually instructive illustration. The asteroid 1604 Tombaugh discovered in 1931 is named after him. He discovered 14 asteroids, beginning with 2839 Annette in 1929, mostly as a byproduct of his search for Pluto and his further searches for other celestial objects. Autograph

Description:
Tracy writes a letter of recommendation for his friend and film director, George Cukor. The actor recommends the director to make war propaganda films. In 1942, Cukor enlisted in the Army Signal Corps. Cukor was 43 at that time which might explain the reason for Tracy writing to Colonel Melvin Gillette, of the Signal Corps Photographic Center. Cukor directed training and propaganda films for a year after which he was honorably discharged because of his age. Tracy and Cukor had worked together on a number of films before and after World War II. Tracy lists some of Cukor's films as a way of showing Cukor's accomplishments. He describes Cukor as, "a man of great intellectual and artistic experience, has a great sense of humor and an enormously quick mind, which seems to me to add materially to his potentialities as an officer. He is a very well educated man...has boundless energy...." Tracy notes in his final paragraph that Cukor understands "human nature." He signs above his typed name, "Spencer Tracy."… Read More
