Edited and adapted for English publication by J. S. G. Simmons. The work is divided into two parts, with the first and larger part focusing on the history of paper-making, particularly paper mills in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Baltic areas. Five appendices discuss moulds, chain-line and laid-line dimensions, the time-lag between paper manufacture and use, the technique of attributing Russian papers to their places of manufacture, and ream-wrapper labels. The appendices are followed by a list of the 815 watermarks reproduced. Lists of dates within the watermarks, a typological index, and an index of the letters and words in the marks conclude the text of the volume.

Description:
Faber and Faber, 2002 8vo (24 cm), XX, 588 pp. Publisher's boards and dust jacket. "In the 1760s a group of amateur experimenters met and made friends in the English Midlands. Most came from humble families, all lived far from the center of things, but they were young and their optimism was boundless: together they would change the world. Among them were the ambitious toymaker Matthew Boulton and his partner James Watt, of steam-engine fame; the potter Josiah Wedgwood; the larger-than-life Erasmus Darwin, physician, poet, inventor, and theorist of evolution (a forerunner of his grandson Charles). Later came Joseph Priestley, discoverer of oxygen and fighting radical. Uglow's vivid, exhilarating account uncovers the friendships, political passions, love affairs, and love of knowledge (and power) that drove these extraordinary men. It echoes to the thud of pistons and the wheeze and snort of engines and brings to life the tradesmen, artisans, and tycoons who shaped and fired the modern… Read More

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1937 2 volumes 8vo (24 cm), XL, 292 pp, 192 illustrations (one folding); xix, 326 pp, ill. 193-367 (one folding). Publisher's cloth (first volume slightly sunned). An extensively revised second edition of the classic study on the art of typography, spanning from the invention of printing to the 20th century, authored by Daniel Berkeley Updike (1860-1941), an American printer and historian of typography. In Volume II, Updike further explores Dutch, Spanish, and English typographies from the same period, elucidating on 19th-century "classical" typefaces such as those of Bodoni and Didot, as well as English types from 1800 to 1844 and American typographical developments. Wrocław: Muzeum Architektury we Wrocławiu, 2010 4o (29 cm), 510 pp. Publisher's laminated boards and dust jacket. A lavishly illustrated monograph presenting the model housing estate, a pivotal feature of the WUWA (Wohnung und Werkraum Ausstellung, Living and Work Space) exhibition in Wroclaw, showcasing one of the most intriguing European examples of the Modern Movement in the 1920s. Within the exhibition vicinity, an experimental housing estate emerged, with eleven architects invited to design innovative buildings under the guidance of urban planning pioneers Heinrich Lauterbach and Adolf Rading. The primary goal was to exhibit new types of small and medium dwellings, diverse house forms, and the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies and construction materials. The buildings were open to the public for three and a half months, then leased for two years to the Wrocław Housing Estate Association for functional testing. After the exhibition's closure, the estate… Read More
