John Duke of Bedford (1389-1435) established the University of Caen in 1432. By 1515 its library boasted some 300 books. By 1701, eleven remained.            These royal Letters Patent put the library on a new footing. They funded a full-time librarian, laid out his duties and PRINTED THE LIBRARY STATUTES FOR THE FIRST TIME.             These stipulate that the library was non-circulating, open to the public on Tuesdays and Fridays and on Thursdays solely to university members. The books were to be stamped with the university's arms, shelved by subject and regularly inventoried. An alphabetic cataloged was to be prepared.
