Description:
Hannover: Totalkunstbetrieb Timm Ulrichs, 3 Hannover 1, Postfach 6043, 1971. Very good. 1 mimeograph sheet (295 x 210) printed in blue on rose paper. Rare: not in KVK or OCLC. This mimeographed "Liste 2" is certainly one of the EARLIEST bibliographies of Ulrichs' graphic work, compiled (and originally typed?) by the artist himself as a vehicle of sale, and remains of the greatest interest to Ulrichs scholars and students of Concrete Art. We have not been able to determine if this "Liste" has been reprinted or reproduced in any form. In a conscious (and characteristic) gesture of rejection, Urichs completely withdrew from the art market in the 1970s, and thus the present leaflet would have been rendered obsolete within only a few years. Why was it saved? If Ulrichs compiled a "Liste" that preceded this one, we have been unable to locate a copy of it. Ulrichs' concrete art and early performances are of real significance in avant-garde art in the 60s and 70s, and yet his entire oeuvre is not completely… Read more

Description:
Fargo, North Dakota: Fargo Union Mission, 1940. Very good. Unbound tract (ca. 5.5" x 4"). 3 pp. Light toning. Preserved in a mylar sleeve. A LURID WARNING OF THE WAGES OF SIN FOR A LIBERATED "MODERN" WOMAN FOLLOWING THE REPEAL OF PROHIBITION IN 1933. Scarce: no other copy has been located. The dread specter of the flapper girl appears seems to have reached Fargo sometime in the 1930s. The protagonist of the present tracts states: "From other folk whom I thought to be my friends I caught the 'Repeal Fever.' I bobbed my hair, rolled down my stockings, cut off my skirts, penciled my eyebrows, painted my lips and stained my fingernails." The consequences of "Repeal Fever" are (of course) drunkenness and early death. Interestingly the protagonist names one of the earliest catalysts for her downfall: cigarette ads on the radio, in magazines, and on billboards. From there she started "sitting in public places." She lost the desire to go to church or congregate with parishioners; instead she favored dance… Read more

Description:
New York: Published for the Honorary consultants to the Army Medical Library by Henry Schuman. [Printed by the Anthoensen Press, Portland, ME], 1950. Large 8vo. xiv, 361, [1] pp. With 12 plates. Original buckram. Edges of textblock a little dusty, insignificant shelf wear. In very good, clean condition. NOT ex-library! Detailed and very useful catalogue of incunabula and early manuscripts, well written. Unlike many such catalogues, the present volume contains valuable information about bindings and provenance. The work is divided into two parts: Incunabula (of which there are 490) and Early Western Manuscripts (nos. 491-525). Part Two describes Oriental Manuscripts (Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Singhalese, and Hebrew). There is a Concordance, index of titles, and an index of names. B.H. Breslauer copy, with his circled acquisition number on first blank; purchased from sale of the famed Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana (Christie's New York, 2005, lot 1300). Garrison/Morton 6783.

Description:
London: Printed for Robert Sayer, Map & Printseller, near Serjeants Inn, Fleet Street, 1748. Unbound. Very good. n.d. (ca. 1748-1760). Large mezzotint (355 x 257 mm). Professionally mounted on archival paper, preserved in mylar L-sleeve with lig-free board support. Some flaws to mezzotint include loss of the word "flies" in the caption (line 1), tear along physician's left arm, and two pinholes at the top; crease evident along horizontal fold. Rare version of this justly famous mezzotint by Spooner after Adriaen van Ostade, in which a bearded physician, wearing a cap, sits in his study and examines a round-bottomed flask partially filled with liquid (presumably urine), his right elbow resting on a book on the table beside him, open to show depictions of plants, his right hand tucked into his robe. The British Museum has several versions of this print, including a very small and square mezzotint (144 x 144 mm), reversed, in which the mezzotint was executed by Richard Houston for Bowles & Carver.… Read more
