Fascicules 1 and 2 are the expanded and updated Editia Secunda; fascicule 3 contains addenda, corrections, and an obituary - by W. O. Steel - of the editor, the British entomologist Walter Douglas Hincks (1906-1961), with a portrait. Published over a rather long period and therefore seldom offered complete. This is the entire volume III, part I, dealing with Puccinia Acetosse - Coronillae - Oblongata - Reamuriae, and complete for these groups. In Russian with Latin nomenclature. A very good, clean copy.

Original printed wrappers. = Describing nearly 300 species of butterflies, including several new species from present-day Ethiopia. Perhaps the only part published, but in any event the only one dealing with diurnal lepidopterids. The colour plate is very nice. Uncut. Stamp on title and blank endpaper, circular label with handwritten number on front wrapper and spine foot otherwise clean. A very good copy. Very scarce. Not in Nissen ZBI.

Large 4to (39.5 x 27.2 cm). 46 pp. Disbound. = A detailed early study on the history of plant groups and their abundance in different geological epochs. The Austrian medical doctor and botanist Franz Joseph Andreas Nicolaus Unger (1800-1870) was a pioneer in many plant sciences, including palaeobotany, plant physiology and embryology, and plant-soil interaction. Georg Mendel was one of his students. Published in the society's Denkschriften, volume 3. A very good clean copy.

Marbled endpapers; speckled edges. = A detailed monograph combining plant-geography, meteorology and geology. Franz Xaver Unger (1800-1870) is perhaps best known for the synthesis of geology and botany: the description and illustration of fossil plants. This is an early work, most of his paleobotanical work dates from after 1850. This copy is dedicated to Carl von Martius and dealing with all aspects of northern Tirol and includes what may be the first geological map of the region around Kitzbühl. Original printed front board. = Two seldom-seen papers by the Austrian palaeobotanist and zoologist Franz Joseph Andreas Nicolaus Unger (1800-1870); published back-to-back in the academy's Denkschriften. The large "Steinbruch" plate is quite nice; the other plates show fossil plant parts and cell-structures. Uncut, with the volume's front board. Some light foxing, otherwise very good.

Original printed wrappers. = Rare offprint of one of Unger's lesser known contributions to the fossil botany of Austria. Part of the author's phyto-paleontological collection still is preserved in the Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz, the oldest museum in Austria. Tiny former owner's inscription on the title page (recto), and old stamp on title page verso. Otherwise very good, clean.

Disbound. = A richly illustrated work on fossil plants by the Austrian botanist, zoologist and palaeontologist Franz Joseph Andreas Nicolaus Unger (1800-1870). One of several richly illustrated works on this subject, which was one of Unger's fortes. The plates show plant remains as found in situ, sometimes along with insects and fish remains. "Unger is notable for proposing a theory of evolution before Charles Darwin. Unger accepted the transmutation of species. During his time his ideas were widely criticized by those who held religious views. In his book Attempt of a History of the Plant World (1852) he devoted a chapter to the evolution of plants" (Wikipedia). Published in the society's Denkschriften, vierter Band. Edges red. = Rare and important work on volcanology with detailed information on the various volcanic minerals. The folded chart contains a list of volcanos arranged according to continent with their name, height, and the name of the person who had measured this. Old stamp in the title page lower margin, and an incription on the same page top margin, otherwise a very good copy. Ward and Carozzi, 2208.

Lewes, privately published, 1878. 4to (27.2 x 21.2 cm). v, 31 pp.; 23 lithographed plates. Original half calf over iridescent cloth boards. Spine with five raised, gilt-lined bands and gilt title. = A well-illustrated work that faced much difficulty in being published, as acknowledged by the author - the English botanist William Charles Unwin (1811-1887) - in a loose, printed leaf bound in front. Originally it was published in 13 issues, the last containing the title, introduction and a list of subscribers. It was printed at the "Sussex Advertiser" Office (Geo. P. Bacon), but that is not the publisher. Spine and leather corners much rubbed; front inner joint broken, otherwise a very good, clean and complete copy of this rather rare work.
