Complete with 56 full page engraved plates in volume 1 and 80 full page engraved plates in volume 2. Notable for its very large linear engravings which provide extensive coverage of the numerous sculptures and wall paintings in the interior of the building, as well as ground plans and perspective views. Gerardi's text is based on previous histories of the building, but adds descriptions of tombs and other features added during and after the basilica's restoration by the architect Alessandro Galilei in the 1730s.Later quarter morocco binding; spine in seven compartments with raised bands; morocco lettering labels, gilt; cloth sides; marbled endpapers. Light staining, foxing and soiling to the text, with the engravings generally offsetting to the letterpress facing pages. The title and first few pages are soiled and have mended closed marginal tears (no loss); else this is a good copy in a fine biding. Illustrated with 17 full page black and white plates. Translated into English by Mrs. Cashel Hoey. A fine, bright copy with just a touch of rubbing. This printing is known bound in green and blue cloth as well as red, with no particular priority noted. Published in French in 1897 as Le Sphinx des Glaces (The Sphinx of the Ice Fields), this is Verne's sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838). It follows the adventures of the narrator and his journey from the Kerguelen Islands onboard the Halbrane. Neither Poe nor Verne had actually visited the remote Kerguelen Islands in the south Indian Ocean, but their works are some of the few literary references to the archipelago.

Original drab paper boards, paper spine labels. Spines and labels worn and chipped, else a very good copy; the text pages are untrimmed. The first edition in English of Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall's edition of the Arabian Nights. He was an Austrian Orientalist who served in the Levant. One of his early commissions in Constantinople was to seek out a manuscript copy of the Nights, but failed. Later, in Egypt, he apparently succeeded. This was the first manuscript discovered which had the ending in which Shahriyar repents of executing Sheherazade. The manuscript and his translation into French have been lost, but a German version survives and is the basis for this translation into English.

A small rubber stamped date (Dec. 2 1936) is impressed in the lower left corner margin of the first leaf, light corner stain, an erasure on the bottom margin, else this is a very good copy of Wynkyn de Worde's craftsmanship. Folio CCCALVII, which contain the ending of the life of St. Brandon (Brendan), and the beginning of the life of St. Erkenwolde, Bishop of London. 'The Golden Legend' (Legenda Aurea), written in the 13th century by the Dominican Jacobus de Voraigne, was probably the third best-selling book in mediaeval Christendom, after the Bible and the Imitation of Christ. It was first rendered into English and printed by William Caxton in 1483. Large leaf, 11 by 16 inches, finely printed on laid paper with a watermark of a cross, a tower and a trefoil clearly seen in the margin between the two columns of print. This leaf printed in black with spaces for manuscript initials which were never put in. From 'La Mer des Hystoires' Tom. 2: 'Le Martyrologe des Sanctz', and commences with the end of the Martyrology for May 19th through June 4th, and leaving room for a large initial 'A' at the initial entry for June. Printed in Batarde, a typeface used mainly in the incunabular period and mainly only for works in the vernacular. This is among the first titles printed in French. Light staining, contemporary manuscript note on the upper margin else a very good copy. In Mediaeval French.
