Original half calf (bottom of spine of plate volume slightly damaged), marbled boards. Nice clean wide-margined copies. From the library of K. Boehm. Poly. Landesinstitutes Techn. Institut Boehm. Staend. Rare copy of the first edition, complete with the plates (lacking in the BNF) of Vallées treatise on perspective and the mechanism of vision. Louis-Léger Vallée (1764-1864 was a French engineer. [cf. Poggendorf II, 11168; Kemp p. 231; Vagnetti Flb 24].

Bookseller's label on front cover (Wm. Curry, Junr. & Co. - Booksellers and Stationers - 9 Upper Sackville Strt.) First edition of this 'best books' guide to French literature. Ventouillac (1796-1834) was born in Calais and emigrated to England in 1816 where he became a professor of French literature at King's College in London and published books on French literature. The present Dibdinesque work lists 1250 titles all of whom are carefully classified and have concise but useful notes (best editions, bibliographical descriptions etc.) by the author or other critics. The introduction gives a survey of French literature from the 'Roman de la Rose' to Victor Hugo. The book was highly praised in the London Literary Gazette: "We cannot do better than recommend this valuable work."

"Cette collection fut formée, pour la majeure partie, par M. Jean-Baptiste Vervier, à Gand (Flandre), vers la fin du siècle dernier; cette époque de troubles, ouvrant une mine inépuisable de richesses artistiques à M. Vervier, doué de connaissances spéciales en peinture, facilita beaucoup sa tâche et fit qu'en peu d'années sa collection devient remarquable... A la mort de M. J.-B. Vervier, en 1817, ses tableaux passèrent par héritage à son fils C.-A. 1843. 2nd édition, Paris, Levavasseur, 1843. 91pp. Somewhat later green wrappers made from a leftover wrapper intended to be used for the Journal Général de l'Imprimerie et de la Librairie for 1875. The author says: "Prouver, dans les quelques pages que suivent, l'utilité des bibliothèques administratives et donner des conseils sur leur composition et les moyens de les agrandir, tel a été le but de mon travail..."

No place, no date. Engraved throughout. Plates not always bound in order and not always numbered. Collation: Halftitle, Avis au Lecteur, Title, 1 (1 unnumbered) 2 - 33, (2 unnumbered), 34 - 43, [43 but misnumbered should be 44], 45 - 57, (2 unnumbered), 58 - 62, [65 but misnumbered should be 63], 64 - 73, 78, 79, (1 unnumbered but should be numbered 76), 77, 74 - 75, 80 - 81, 86 - 87, 84 - 85, 82 - 83, 88. Original paper wrappers (a bit worn). Halftitle duststained, title and a few pages with some waterstaining, last 4 ff with waterstain in the margin, otherwise a good copy with large margins (page size 12 x 19) especially large lower margin. One of the many variant editions of this popular work. The present copy says Paris on the title page but the address has been mostly erased - before printing - so this is probably a pirated copy (?). 1829. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1829. 28pp. Orwrs. (dam., loose & waterstaining throughout). Answer of the administrator of the Imprimerie Royale, M. Baron Villebois, to the demand of the Parisian printers of the suppression of the Imprimerie Royale in 1829. They found the Imprimerie Royale dangerous for the freedom, destructive for commerce, and thought it misused the taxpayers' money. In this report Villebois refutes, like his predecessors had done, the arguments of the printers. [c.f. Duprat, Histoire de l'Imprimerie Impériale de France...].

The 'Calcographie du Louvre' was created in 1797. It contains a collection of copperplates for engravings, a collection of prints. And also printing workshop where prints were printed from the plates in the collection that were to be sold at the Louvre. The present work is the catalogue of the collection in the mid-nineteenth century with list of prints available and their prices. He was also one of the founders of the Grolier Club. Lovely copies with only very occasional light staining. Numerous illustrations. The most important architectural dictionary of the nineteenth century and one of the great books in the entire literature of architecture. In the 1880's, after Viollet-le-Duc's death, the 'Librairie des imprimeries réunis' which had absorbed the 'Librairie Centrale d'Architecture' published the present 10-volume edition, the last produced in the nineteenth century.
