Amstelædami [Amsterdam]: Apud Franciscum vander Plaats, 1704.. 4to, (iv), 76 pp. Title vignette and 38 plates, some occasional marks and staining, mostly marginal and to early and late leaves only, 19th century Dutch binder's label to the rear paste down. 19th century half tree calf, marbled sides, gilt spine with a red label, recent subtle repair to the spine ends. A lovely example of this Dutch emblem book, using plates that had previously appeared in a Leiden printing, "Elegantissimorum Emblematum" in 1696.

Contemporary calf, a.e.g., covers with double gilt rules, cornerpieces and a central rose, gilt phoenix to the foot of the spine with the motto Rinasce Piu Gloriosa ("It rises again more glorious"), spines a little worn with slight loss to tops An important early work on Japan, including a translation of Schouten's account of Siam. Varenius is best known for his "Geographia Generalis", published by Elzevir the following year. Willems 1095.

(ii), 542, (2) pp. Original brown half morocco over marbled boards, the gilt lettered direct to the spine, top edge gilt, the others untimmed. 51 fine photographic plates (one duplicated), mostly of plants plus some portraits of Veitch nurserymen. Slight rubbing to the boards, an attractive copy. A magnificent record of one of the pre-eminent nurseries of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The family firm introduced numerous foreign and exotic species Britain and were masters at cultivating them. A trade edition was published in the same year.
